Obituary


Alton William Sommerfield, Sr. Loving husband, father, papaw and friend, passed away Sunday June 7, 2015 at Brenham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his children. Visitation will be at Brenham Memorial Chapel on Wednesday June 10, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday June 11, 2015 in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville with Pastor Erbey Gonzales officiating. Burial follow in the church cemetery.

Alton was born in the Gay Hill community on February 13, 1927, the son of Willie and Lillie Dippel Sommerfield. Alton was baptized April 1927 in Evangelical Church of Peace of Gay Hill and confirmed October 25, 1942 in St Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor John Stripes. He married Bernice Emelia Herrmann on November 28, 1948 in St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham.

Alton attended Williams (Possum Trot) School and graduated from Brenham High School. He graduated from Blinn College in 1957. Alton served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 to 1953. He worked at Brenham Broom and Mop, Washington County Broom and Mop and owned Star Broom and Mop. He was a route salesman for Bob’s Texas Style Chips. Alton enjoyed hunting, fishing with lots of family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening. He loved family get togethers, socializing, barbequing and spending time with his family. Many good times were had with his special cousin and running buddy Lee Roy Weiss. His Friday afternoons were spent with his lifelong friend Elmer Neutzler at Robert’s Service Station.

Alton is survived by: his son Alton W. Sommerfield, Jr and wife Monica of Brenham; daughter, Diana Sommerfield Armstrong and husband Leroy Armstrong of Katy and Brenham; five grandsons, Jeff Stewart (Shannon) of Katy Texas, Brad Sommerfield (Meredith) of Brenham, Christopher and Jonathan Armstrong both from California, Eric Sommerfield (Catherine) of Brenham; five great-grand daughters, Amber and Taylor Stewart from Katy, Izabelle and Gabrielle Sommerfield and Holly Sommerfield all of Brenham; two sisters, Dorothy Schwettmann and husband Bill and Shirley Jalowy and husband Ewald, Uncle Almot (Fritz) Sommerfeld; sisters-in law, Allyne Weiss, Evelyn Maurer, Lillie Watkins and Nina Herrmann; former son-in-law, Clayton Stewart; and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Bernice Sommerfield, parents, infant brother Cleburne, mother-in-law and father-in-law Henry and Emelia Herrmann, brothers-in-law Lee Roy Weiss, Robert Watkins, Reinhold Herrmann, Alfred Herrmann, Henry (Bubba) Herrmann and Melvin Maurer; sister-in-law Emelia (baby) Hoff.
Grandsons and Douglas Maurer will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Elmer Neutzler and Almot Sommerfeld.

Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran of Wiedeville, Hospice Brazos Valley or a charity of your choice.
