Obituary

Arthur Eugene Calaway, 89 of Brenham, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. and rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill, Tx with Rev. Jayaraju “Jay” Polisetty as celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Arthur was born June 22, 1927 in Lake View, Texas to Frank and Dovie (Wilson) Calaway. He was proud to serve his country in the US Navy. On November 20, 1948, Arthur was united in marriage to Dorothy Rosner. They made their home in Houston, where he was employed by Cameron Iron Works as a supervisor. In the 80's they moved to Brenham where they enjoyed the country life together raising a garden, canning, taking care of his cattle and being outdoors.

After his home burned March 1, 2015, he moved to Argent Court Assisted Living where he made his home the past 2 years. Gene greeted each resident by their name with a "Good Morning." He enjoyed bingo, sharing his homemade wine, and telling stories. He was loved by all and known as Uncle Gene. He was very happy to call Argent Court his home and he enjoyed sharing his cooking with his friends.

He enjoyed making wine, baking, trying new recipes, planting his garden, photography and being involved with the Knights of Columbus. He was like a history book and had an incredible memory. If our family needed to recall a date, name or family event Uncle Gene was sure to know.

Arthur was an active, devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He volunteered at the Polish Heritage Festival and at funeral luncheons. For fifteen years, he and his wife were adorers on Monday mornings. Arthur was a 4th degree member of The Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 66 years Dorothy Calaway, and brother Calvin Victor Calaway.

Surviving family includes a sister, Gladys Roberts, numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Greg Rosner, Gary Gaetz, Ronnie Gaetz, Eugene Gaetz, Donnie Wesneski, Steven Ray Wesneski. Honorary pallbearers will be Tracy Mikolajchak, Beverly Copeland and Danita Georgal.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Mass Intention for Arthur Calaway at St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to St. Mary's Catholic Church building.

His family would like to thank all the staff at Argent Court Assisted Living for the love and compassionate care, Texas Home Health, Dr. Greg Workman and the team of nurses at Baylor Scott & White Brenham for their excellent care.
