Obituary

Bertha “Mutzy” Fischer passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Scott & White Hospital Brenham.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 27th from 5- 7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be Sunday, June 28th at 2 p.m., in St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg with Pastor Denise Seymour officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Bertha “Mutzy” Fischer was born April 27, 1919 in Burton. She was the daughter of Walter and Betty (Prenzler) Schwartz. She was baptized July 6, 1919 by Pastor H.S. Schulz and confirmed March 24, 1934 by Pastor A. Walton, both in St. John’s UCC of Burton. She was married to Oliver Fischer on October 10, 1942 in St. John’s by Pastor Paul Kniker. They made their home in the Rehburg Community. Mutzy attended school in Burton and graduated from Brenham High School, Blinn College and Sam Houston State University.

She began her teaching career in the Boundary School and after five years, she began teaching in Burton. She taught there 30 years.

Mutzy was active in her church and community. She served her church as an organist, teacher, VBS superintendent and youth leader. She was active in the WELCA. She was a member of the Lydia Circle.

She was a member of the Burton American Legion Auxiliary, Burton Fire Department Auxiliary, Heritage Society and Burton Cotton Gin and Museum. She also was a member of Brenham Area Retired School Personnel.

She volunteered at Trinity Medical Center, Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village, Bluebonnet Hills and Burton Cotton Gin Museum.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; brother and sister-in-law, Walter C. and Annie Belle Schwartz; nephews, Douglas Fischer, Bradley Fischer and Leroy Fuchs; special relatives, Milroy “Fizzie” Guelker, Freddie Guelker, Janet Guelker Kelm, Henry Guelker and Larry Kelm.

She is survived by: nephews and wives, Charles and Kay Ann Schwartz, B. J. and Diane Fischer, Eugene and Emily Fuchs, Gary and Linda Knipstein; nieces and husbands, Ann and Brian Bishop, Kay Lyn and Scott Murphy; great nephews, nieces and their spouses, Ben Fuelberg, Annie Schwartz, Todd Murphy, Cole Murphy, Holly and Lee Hasse, Stephen and Melissa Fuchs, Chad and Ginger Meadows, Tiffany and Bryan Galligans; numerous great-great nephews, nieces and cousins. Of course it would be impossible to name all the people whose lives she touched because everyone was family to her. There are many more Guelker, Prenzler, and Schwartz cousins who were special to her.

Pallbearers will be B. J. Fischer, Eugene Fuchs, Gary Knipstein, Charles Schwartz, Ann Bishop, Kay Murphy, Arlin Naegeli and Ryan Rogas. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Guelker, Will and Mary Rogas, Harold Kelm, Joyce and Herbert Rust, Carol Naegeli, Russell and Amey Rogas, Brad and Amy Jasinski.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Kruse Lutheran Village Staff for their care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Rehburg.
