We were so saddened by the news of Woody's passing. My Dad, Sgt Major Charlie Luster served proudly with him in the 420th for many years. Charlie respected and loved him dearly and told so many stories of their service together. Another wonderful man has been called home.

Mr. Free was like a grandfather to me. He was such an inspiration and I love his family very much. He taught me how to drive my first tractor at age 4! I will cherish all the wonderful memories I had with him and I will miss him very much, but I know he is at peace in heaven. I wish I could be there today, but I know he is with me. I send all of my love and prayers to his family.

Our sincere condolences to the family. Woody was a good friend that was instrumental in my 25 year employment, both military and civilian, with the 420th Engr Bde. He was instrumental in me finding my biological mother during one of our many exercises in Germany. We also enjoyed many 42 games during lunch in the early and mid-80's. We had fun and I look forward to getting reacquainted with him in Heaven.

Joan
I well remember you, him and your family. He was a friendly, unassuming, and humble man, generous with his time, eager to help where he could and very importantly a family man. I well remember the visits I had at your home and the tender, realistic care that you both provided not only to your children and grandchildren but more importantly to your parents in some of their final days.
May God carry you through this next few days and weeks as you close this chapter and start at the next one of your life.

Joan and family,

Selfless service to God, family, country and community. A great patriot, a great role-model, a great person, and a great friend. It was a pleasure and an honor to have served with him in my time with the 420th. He set the bar high for those who follow. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time and pray for God's healing power as you deal with this loss.

Sincerely,

My sincere condolences to the entire Free family. Woody, as he said to call him was the face of the 420th Engineer Brigade for so long. He was always so kind and gracious to all who came into contact with him. He lead by example, a true leader. He earned his place in Heaven with all the good he did while here on earth. May the Free family in the days ahead reflect on the many fond memories of his life, and remember, that no one dies until the last one who knew him speaks their name. I know I will see him again!

Art,
You might not remember me but I was the 420th chemical officer for many years in the 1980s and early 1990s. I just wanted to express my condolences to you and your family and let you know that your dad meant a lot to me. I will always remember his staunch support for those in his command and his constant kind and friendly nature. He was a great officer.
