Obituary

Ervin H. Sommerfeld, 86, of Brenham passed away Monday, December 7, 2015

Visitation will be Friday, December 11th from 5-7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 12th at 3 p.m. in Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem with Pastor Ken Weiss officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Ervin was born February 21, 1929 to Otto Henry and Emma (Wegner) Sommerfeld in the Wesley Community. He was baptized June 2, 1929 and confirmed April 2, 1944 at Salem Lutheran, where he remained a lifelong member. He attended Wesley School. Ervin farmed and ranched his family’s farm. He enjoyed family “coming home” for holidays. As a treat for his cattle, he kept plenty of peppermint in his pockets. At Salem Lutheran, he served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, assisted in mailing church bulletins and served as superintendent of Salem Cemetery. He had strong political opinions and served as election clerk. Ervin was also a loving caregiver to his mother and sister, Weda Preuss. His favorite way to say good-bye was, “Don’t take no wooden nickels”.

Survivors include: nieces and nephews, John F. Kruse, Dwayne Rogge, Connie and Thomas Smith, Kenneth Priesmeyer, Gale Priesmeyer, Gilbert and Carolyn Goeke, Kathryn and Daryl Gummelt, Roger and Carol Sommerfeld, Karen And Fred Henry Heidemann; great nieces and great nephews, Jordan, Andrew and Erin Smith, Josh Heidemann, Justin and Elizabeth Sommerfeld, Jason and Melissa Smith, Adam and Leigh Ann Seilheimer, Tracy and Kenan Meier, Jeffory and Rachael Goeke; great-great nieces and nephews, Linsey and Joe Meier, Kasyn and Lilly Goeke, Olivia and Austin Sommerfeld, Makayla and Jake Smith, Adalynn and Emileigh Seilheimer; sister-in-law Earline Sommerfeld; and many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers-in-law Bernice and Theodore Rogge, Bertha and John Kruse, Hettie and Johann Quebe, Viola and Raymond Priesmeyer, Weda Preuss; brothers and sister-in-law, Emmanuel and Mildred Sommerfeld, Otto C. Sommerfeld; nieces and nephews, Arlene and Lynwood Rost, Charles Sommerfeld and Michael Kruse.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Kapchinski, Randy Kapchinski, John F. Kruse, Dwayne Rogge, Kenneth Priesmeyer and Roger Sommerfeld. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Smith, Gilbert Goeke, Daryl Gummelt, Jeffory Goeke, Andy Smith and Justin Sommerfeld.

Memorials may be given to Hospice Brazos Valley or Salem Lutheran Church.
