Obituary

Esther Emma (Koehler) Schulz, age 95+ years of Bleiblerville and the widow of Alvin R. Schulz Sr., passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2014 at Argent Court Assisted Living in Brenham. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014 at Welcome Lutheran Church with Rev. John R. Sutton Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., tonight, Thursday, April 3rd at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Esther was born May 23, 1918 to Otto & Lisetta (Wensel) Koehler. She was baptized into the Christian faith on June 23, 1918 and confirmed on March 20, 1932 both in Welcome Lutheran Church by Pastor Jacob Appel. On October 15, 1940, she was united in marriage to Alvin R. Schulz Sr. in the same church by Rev. I. M. Mansur.

Esther was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She and Alvin bought the farm in 1944 from Esther’s grandmother Wensel and in later years they bought additional property attached to the farm. She enjoyed the outdoors spending time in her gardens and flowerbeds. She shared her vegetables with family and friends. She enjoyed picking pecans. Esther was active in several organizations. She was a member of Welcome Lutheran Church her entire lifetime. She was assistant Sunday school superintendent for 25 years; charter member of the Altar Guild; member of the Women of the Church since 1941, charter member of the Mary-Martha Circle, where she held several offices, Sunday school secretary for 30 years,and Austin County Farm Bureau since 1946. She was active with Vacation Bible School and served as hostess for many years. She was a member of Texas Extension Education Club for over 70 years where she held several offices. She enjoyed making goodies for the Austin County Fair-Country Store and was noted for her Pecan Carmel Popcorn and her canned pickles. She enjoyed exhibiting items of her flowers, baked goods and canned goods in the judging contests. She was a charter member of the Industry Lioness Club and later transferred her membership to the Brenham Lioness Club until it was disbanded. She was a member and supporter of the Bleiblerville Fire Department. She enjoyed playing cards, dominos and quilting with her friends. All of her children and her 12 grandchildren received a handmade quilt. Her cooking skills were hard to beat. On the spur of the moment, she could have a home cooked meal. She enjoyed cooking and her most favorite dessert requested from her family was tapioca.

In October of 2010, Esther moved to Argent Court Assisted Living. She loved the extended families at Argent Court.


She is survived by her loving family, son and daughter-in-law, Alvin R. Schulz, Jr. and wife Judy of Bleiblerville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vernell Lois and Allen Schubert of Industry, Diana Kay Krause-Lampe and Donald W. Lampe and Sandra Louise and Douglas Borchardt all of Brenham; grandchildren, Gregg and Candy Schubert, Scottie and Rachel Schubert, Rodney and Diana Schubert, Gina and Lee Miles, Dwayne and Kerry Schulz, Danny and Candace Schulz, Darrel and Lillian Schulz, Randy and Kami Krause, Kim Krause and special friend, Farrell Luedke, Kelly and Alan Hodde, Alison Borchardt, Justin and Kathleen Borchardt ; step-grandchildren Shannon and Keith Bullin and Matt and Michelle Lampe; great-grandchildren Angie and Nathan Grawunder, Brady and Jamie Schubert, Hunter Schubert and friend Devon, Lauren and Brady Lee, Lindsey Schubert, Jared Schubert, Clayton Schubert, Kinch Schubert, Glenn Miles, Jake Miles, Sean Schulz, Britani Schulz, Walker Schulz, Caroline Schulz, Aiden Schulz, Nicholas Krause, Kamryn Krause, Avery Hodde, Karter Hodde and Crosby Borchardt; step-great-grandchildren Bailey and Brad Bullin, Megan and Mason Lampe; Conner and Riley Hanley; great-great-grandchildren Jenna Lee, Layne Grawunder, Kailyn Schubert, Ava Lee and Whitley Grawunder; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Reverend Leslie and Margaret Schulz and sister-in-law Laverne Kalbow along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father-in-law and mother-in-law Alfred and Frieda Glaeser Schulz, her husband of 68 years, sisters and brother-in-law Leona and Emmit Schultz, Elda and Henry Dusek, and brother and sister-in-law Lee and Adeline Koehler, brother-in-law Arthur Kalbow and niece-in-law Cheryl Kalbow Welsch, great-great-granddaughters Ella Faith Lee and Sloan Olivia Schubert.

Pallbearers are Gregg, Scottie, and Rodney Schubert, Dwayne, Danny, and Darrel Schulz, Randy Krause and Justin Borchardt. Honorary pallbearers are Gina Miles, Kim Krause, Kelly Hodde and Alison Borchardt along with members of the Bleiblerville Extension Club, Welcome Lutheran Church Altar Guild and the Mary-Martha Circle.

Memorials may be given to Welcome Lutheran Church Building Fund or favorite charity.
