Obituary

Evelyn Metzger peacefully began her heaven-ward journey on March 10, 2014 and is now reunited with her beloved husband, Bruno.

Evelyn was born on December 13, 1922 near Luckenbach, Texas to Henry and Alma Petsch. The second of three children, she enjoyed country life on the farm with older sister, Paula, and younger brother, Vernon, both of whom preceded her in death. Evelyn enjoyed riding horses and helping her father run the farm.

She married her devoted, loving husband Bruno in Fredericksburg, Texas on May 14, 1946. Their comfortable little home in Fredericksburg is where they welcomed to the world their first son, Roger. A few years later Evelyn and Bruno moved to San Antonio where daughter, Karla, and son, Dean were born. Being dutiful parents who placed a premium on faith and education, they both worked tirelessly to provide quality private catholic school educations for Roger, Karla and Dean – each of whom eventually attended college and earned degrees.

“Oma” cherished life’s simple pleasures and relished spending time with her grandchildren - early morning coffee with her oldest grandson, Kurt, who later gave Evelyn her first great-grandchild; getting out the toy-box full of Smurfs for grandson Ryan and later watching him play baseball at Brenham High School and Baylor University; and gathering pecans and sitting on the front porch swing with granddaughter Claire and later watching her perform on stage and on the football field as captain of her high school dance team. God also blessed Evelyn with five precious great-granddaughters – Bailey, Aubrey , Ellie, Grace and Evan. She was also a “surrogate” grandmother to Jake, Dixie, Lindsay, Chrissy, Tori, Jana, Leah, Mia, Reid and numerous other young youngsters that she cared for over the years.

Evelyn enjoyed baking pies for the Bluebonnet Inn Restaurant, volunteering at the Brenham State School, attending Metzger-Petsch Family reunions at Lake Travis, and playing pinochle and dominoes with her friends at Kruse Village. Never one to sit still, she looked forward to her annual trips to Las Vegas with Karla and Ken; treks with Roger and Tamy to visit Kurt and Ryan; and frequent trips to Dallas and then Austin to see Dean, Julie and Claire.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Roger and his wife, Tamy of Brenham; her daughter, Karla Thomas and her husband, Ken Thomas of Lake Travis; and her son, Dean and his wife, Julie of Austin. She is additionally survived by grandson Kurt, who lives in Dallas with his daughters Bailey, Aubrey and Ellie; grandson Ryan who lives in Frisco, Texas with his wife, Olivia, and daughters Grace and Evan; and granddaughter Claire who is attending Texas A&M University in College Station. She also leaves behind sister-in law, Charlene Petsch and nephew, Thomas Petsch, both of San Antonio.

To all of us who loved her and knew her as Mom, Oma or Evy she will be deeply missed. But we are comforted knowing she has earned her reward of eternal life with God and all the angels in heaven.

Visitation with the family will be Friday, March 14, 2014 from 6 PM to 8 PM, with a wake service beginning at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, March 15, 2014 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Brenham, Texas, and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tom Petsch, Harold Sprawls, Bud Smith, Ted Nelson, Joel Romo, Albert House Jr, Ed Pothul and Bill Cramer.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all caring friends and staff at Kruse Village and Hospice Brazos Valley.
