Obituary

George Allen Sanderson was born June 21, 1921 in Galveston, Texas to parents George William and Sadie Allen (Grant) Sanderson. After graduating from Ball High School, in 1939, he attended the University of Houston. In September 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of several months of training in San Diego, Alameda, and Norfolk, George was stationed for three years in the LION 1 unit on the Pacific island of Espiritu Santo. After being honorably discharged on November 20, 1945, he returned to Galveston and went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad as a fireman on freight trains.

On September 6, 1946, George was united in marriage to Catherine Marie Breitkreutz at First Lutheran Church in Galveston. Shortly thereafter, he began a long career in banking at First Hutchings-Sealy National Bank. Later in life, he would finish his career at Texas Tech University in credit and collections. Upon retirement, George and Catherine returned to Galveston.

Throughout his life, George was involved in church and community. He served numerous years as treasurer and as vice president and also taught Sunday School at Sr. John’s Lutheran Church. He also served as PTL president and was a member of the Pilot Club and Galveston Civic Music Association. In 1990, George and Catherine relocated to Brenham, her hometown. Catherine passed away August 3, 2011. George remained active and lived independently up until his death on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at his home.

George was also preceded in death by his sister Clara Audrey Sanderson Daulong.

Surviving loving family includes his daughter Karin Tyssen and husband Cliff of Brenham, grandson Kevin Tyssen, sister-in-law Grace Conklin and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 1:00 at Prairie Lea Cemetery with Chaplain Doug Tromblee officiating.

George’s family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to Hospice Brazos Valley who provided the utmost in compassionate and respectful care over the last several months.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Hospice Brazos Valley.
