Obituary

Hazel Shaw Mangham Meyers passed away December 5, 2015 in Brenham, Texas.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Hazel will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband.

Hazel was born September 25, 1923 in San Antonio, Texas to Clarence Edward Mangham and Hazel Shaw Mangham. She grew up in San Antonio and attended Alamo Heights and Seguin High Schools. Hazel joined the Waves during World War II and served as a teletype operator until the end of the war. After the war she attended Trinity University in San Antonio where she majored in Art. Throughout her life Hazel pursued her interest in art and studied at Warren Hunter School in Texas and the Honolulu Academy of Art on Oahu. Hazel was a well-known portrait and landscape artist in Brenham where she often donated her art to benefit worthy community causes.

In 1947 Hazel married Lt. James Joseph Meyers and together they spent thirty years together as a military family with their children; James, Catherine and Harry. During their time in the military, they were stationed in Fort Bragg, NC; Zell am See, Austria; Fort Campbell, KY; Fort Shafter, Hawaii; Tehran, Iran and Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Hazel loved her children and always felt her life was full. She enjoyed the military life and enjoyed traveling with her family throughout Jim’s military career. The couple retired to Brenham where Hazel enjoyed cooking, gardening and painting.

Hazel is survived by: her daughter, Catherine Downes (husband Vachel) of Centreville, Maryland; her son, Harry Meyers of Brenham; and her granddaughter Katherine Downes of Centreville, Maryland.

Hazel was preceded in death by: husband, Colonel James J. Meyers; son, James Kearney Meyers; grandchild, Stacy Kristin Turner; and two brothers, Felix Shaw Mangham and Clarence Edward Mangham.
