Obituary

Helen Tabitha Cowen, 81 of Burton, went to be with her Lord and Savior July 14, 2017 at Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility in Bryan, TX.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m., Monday, July 17 in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 18 in Brenham Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Paul Cruz and Rev. Billy C. Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

She was born in San Saba, TX on March 22, 1936 to Benjamin Hines Pierce and Sarah Jane (Brown) Pierce. On May 21, 1956 she married Joseph Melton Cowen in Georgetown, TX.

Helen was a faithful wife and mother who loved to fish and travel the back roads enjoying the beautiful countryside. She enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and boardgames with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as a young adult and faithfully served by being active in Sunday School, Women’s Ministries and Nursing Home Visitation. She attended Cornerstone Christian Center over 30 years and became a member in 1993.

She was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Sarah, husband of 56 years Joe, brothers David Pierce, Charles Pierce, Jim Pierce, Pete Pierce, Andy Pierce and great-granddaughter Katherine Hope Weber.

Helen is survived by her son Robert Johnson and wife Regina of Port Lavaca; daughter Debora Creel and husband Gary of Burton; daughter Cindy Byrd and husband Rev. Billy C of North Little Rock, Arkansas; daughter Dolly Rash of Brenham; son Joseph Cowen III and wife Chanda of Brenham; brother John Pierce of Belton; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Adam Weber, Clint Schwarz, Ky Weber, Thaddeus Byrd, Liam Weber and Jett Cowen.

The family would like to thank those who helped care for her: Mrs. Dorothy Taplin of Burton, Staff of Baylor Scott & White of Brenham, Baylor Scott & White of College Station and Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility of Bryan.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Cornerstone Christian Center or Hospice Brazos Valley
