Obituary

James “Jim” Meschwitz passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 surrounded by family.

Visitation will be Monday, November 30th from 5-7 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, December 1st at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Ernesto Elizondo celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Jim was born September 3, 1951 in Brenham to George and Mary Meschwitz. He was baptized, confirmed and served as an altar boy at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. Jim was a graduate of Brenham High School and Blinn College with an Associate Degree in History. He also studied political science at Southwestern University.

On May 4, 1995, he married Cynthia Shultz in Austin. On November 17, 2015, they were remarried in the Catholic faith. Jim was employed by the Austin ISD as a special education teacher’s aide. He previously had worked at the Brenham and Austin State Schools.

Jim was a Boy Scout and an adult Cub Scout leader and a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree. He had diverse interests: being a Star Trek and Dr. Who enthusiast, collecting Marvel comics, studying different religions and collecting religious symbols, traveling and visiting churches and historical markers, listening to opera and German folk music, reading about the physicist Neil De Grasse-Tyson. He loved pets, dogs Buttons and Gus and Pumpkin the cat.

Survived by loving family: wife, Cynthia Meschwitz (Austin); mother, Mary Meschwitz (Brenham); children, Megan Voelkel and husband Beau (Brenham), Billy Jalowy and wife Donna (Brenham), Vickie Reynolds (Austin); grandchildren, Emalee Archer, Cody Reynolds, Aaron Surrett and special friend Paige Hand, Kyle Powers and special friend Taylor Smith, Brandon Surrett and special friend Chelsey Harmon, Clay Jalowy; brother, Gene Meschwitz (Brenham).

He was preceded in death by: his father, George Meschwitz; grandparents, Michael and Emma Meschwitz and Frank and Annie Krizan; daughter, Michelle Surrett, grandson, Nicholas Jalowy.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Powers, Clay Jalowy, Cody Reynolds, Brandon Surrett, Aaron Surrett, Thomas Ashe and Ben Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Cancer Society or Hospice Brazos Valley.
