Obituary

Janis Mann Huitt, age 90, died at home on February 7, 2015. She was born at home July 14, 1924 in Judsonia, Arkansas, the daughter of Winnie Latta Mann and Ralph C. Mann. She was graduated from Searcy (Arkansas) High School and went on to attend Auburn University and the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a BA in Fine Arts

Janis dropped out of college during WWII and went to Washington, DC where she worked for the FBI. In 1945, she married Jimmie L. Huitt of Monroe, LA. Janis spent much of her early adult life in Glenshaw, PA (a suburb of Pittsburgh) where she was a member and youth choir director at Glenshaw Presbyterian Church, President of the Glenshaw Century Club and played violin for the Glenshaw Players.

In her later adult life, Jim’s career with Gulf Oil took them to live in Kuwait, London, Midland, Zaire (Congo), Nigeria, New Orleans and Houston. In 1985, they retired to a ranch near Industry, Texas where they raised purebred and full blood Limousin cattle and were active in the Texas Limousin Association. They again moved in 1996 to Kruse Village in Brenham, Texas where she was a member of Brenham Presbyterian Church and continued to enjoy playing golf, tennis and bridge.

Janis was preceded in death by Jim, her husband of 69 years, and survived by a son Jerry and Jerry’s wife Renice of New Ulm, TX and a son Jimmie and his wife Cora of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Adam Huitt who resides with his wife Sarah in Charlotte, NC, Abigail Mackenzie who resides with her husband Fraser in Queenstown, New Zealand; and Alexandra Huitt of Richmond, VA. Additionally, she is survived by six great grandchildren, Caroline, Hamilton, Carlton and Catherine Huitt of Charlotte, NC and Hatten and Hollyford Mackenzie of Queenstown, New Zealand.

A memorial service to celebrate Janis’s life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Brenham Presbyterian Church, 900 South Jackson Street, Brenham, TX, followed by a reception for friends and family at the Church.
