Obituary

Jerrie Elizabeth Hejl Collins passed away peacefully on August 10, 2016 at her daughter’s home in Brenham, Texas with all her children at her side.

A memorial service will be held in Brenham Memorial Chapel, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2016.

She was born in Seaton, Texas to Jerry Edwin Hejl and Alba Kopecky Hejl on February 21, 1928. Jerrie grew up in El Campo, Texas and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a degree in Slavonic Languages.

While working in Houston, she met Jerry Hicks Collins on a blind date and they were married on September 7, 1952. Jerry’s work as a geophysicist in the oil and gas industry took them to several places in Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas. They moved to Houston in 1973 where Jerrie spent over 40 years before moving to Brenham in March 2015 to live with her daughter Carol. She and Jerry celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary before he passed away in 2001.

While raising four children, Jerrie worked for many years teaching Russian and working as an executive assistant for several companies including Abercrombie Oil and ARCO. After retiring, Jerrie enjoyed volunteering at House of Amos and as a Spanish/English instructor, as well as writing, reading, painting and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by: son John Collins, wife Sherry and their children Ryan and Lindsey; daughter Carol Jensen, husband Mark; son Jay Collins, wife Julie and their children Christopher and Keri; and daughter Laura Jurasin, husband Greg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 302 E. Blue Bell Road, Brenham, TX 77833 or Redeemer Church, 2305 S. Day St. #211, Brenham, TX 77833.
