Obituary

Lillie Bertha (Sommerfeld) Weiss at the age of 109, seven months and fifteen days of Brenham and the widow of Herman H. Weiss, Sr., passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Scott & White Hospital-Brenham.

Visitation for Mrs. Weiss will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Saturday, October 19 in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services are 3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 20 in Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Matthew Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Lillie was born March 1, 1904 in the Williams/Possum Trot Community of Washington County, Texas to Julius and Bertha (Kurtz) Sommerfeld. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill and on November 22, 1923 she was united in marriage to Herman H. Weiss by Rev. F. Apfelbach in the same church. In 1943 she and her husband moved into town and became members of Grace Lutheran Church where she remained a faithful member. In 1945 the Weiss’ opened a service station across from the American Legion Home. That operation continued for 22 years. They were married for 61 years when Herman passed away on August 18, 1984. Lillie was an avid baseball fan especially to her beloved New York Yankees and rooting for Yogi Berra. Whether it was tears of disappointment at a loss or tears of joy after a victory, she and her husband would cry with the team. She kept active well into her nineties and mowed her lawn when she was 94. Lillie slowed down a bit at the age of 104 when she moved into the nursing home. The family gatherings remained very special to her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons Herman H. Weiss Jr. and Clarence Weiss, brothers Ed, William, Melvin, Albert and Leslie Sommerfeld, sisters Lena Rodenbeck,Celesta Rosner and an infant baby sister, son-in-law Woodrow Dahmann and grandson Paul Alan Gajeske.

Her surviving family includes son and daughters-in-law, Lee Roy & Allyne Weiss and LaVerne Weiss; daughters and son-in-law Lillie Mae Dahmann and Doris Ann & Robert Gajeske Jr.; brother and sister-in-law, Almot “Fritz” & Sydonia Sommerfeld ; grandchildren Don Weiss (Kay) Pamela Bolenbarr (Don), Roy Lee Dahmann (Becky), David Dahmann (Lynette), Michael Dahmann (Charlotte), Sherri Finke (Weldon), Susie Sefcik (Michael Holder), Sandra Duch (Roger), Terry Locke (John), Robert Gajeske III, Lisa Wisenbaker (Paul); numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews

Pallbearers will be Donald Lee Weiss, Robert Gajeske III, David Dahmann, Michael Dahmann, Weldon Finke, Don Bolenbarr, Roger Duch and Paul Wisenbaker. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Weiss, Roy Lee Dahmann, Alton Sommerfeld, and Charles Schramme.

Memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church

Services are in the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., Brenham.
