Obituary

Lydia Warmke Winkelmann, 96 of Brenham, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 at Gazebo Terrace Convalescent Center.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 9th from 5-7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 10th at 10 a.m. at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem with Pastors Charles Parnell and Toby Burk officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was born September 18, 1917 in the Bleiblerville Community of Austin County to Fritz and Ella (Eben) Warmke. Lydia was baptized April 14, 1918 and confirmed October 23, 1932 both at Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome. She, the youngest of eight children, grew up on the family farm and attended school in the Bleiblerville Community.

On October 1, 1942, Lydia was married to Fred A. Winkelmann at Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome by Rev. I. M. Mansur. She was employed by New York Store and later by J.C. Penney Company from where she retired after many years.

Lydia was a member and also the oldest member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem. She sang in the church choir, was a Sunday School teacher, Cub Scout den mother and was involved in Ladies Circle.

With her warm smile and the twinkle in her eyes, she enjoyed life. Lydia loved visiting others, bowling, playing dominos and cards especially Pitch, fishing and gardening. She enjoyed preparing for family gatherings, summer cook outs and especially Thanksgiving meals.

Her loving family includes: sons, Darrell Winkelmann, Fred L. Winkelmann and wife Bonnie all of Brenham. She was “Granny Winks” to grandchildren, Jeff Winkelmann of Brenham, Sara and Beth Winkelmann of Richmond, Ryan and Stephanie Winkelmann of Brenham, Laura and Ryon Jones of Uvalde, John Winkelmann and special friend Geneva Aguilar of Brenham; great-grandchildren, Dalton and Mallory Winkelmann and Ely Jones. Also surviving are numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Winkelmann; siblings and their spouses, Laura and Ernest Luedeker, Arnold and Gladys Warmke, Anita and Leon Delion, Harry and Mercedes Warmke, Freddy and Lillie Mae Warmke, Lee and Verlin Warmke, Walter Warmke and Myrtle Warmke Bentke; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Louis and Lillie Winkelmann, Hildegard and Charlie Fuelberg, Erwin and Mildred Winkelmann, Raymond and Dorothy Winkelmann and Walter Winkelmann.

Pallbearers will be Monte Warmke, Earl “Bobby” Luedeker, Veril “Dick” Dietzmann, Kenneth Winkelmann, Todd Johnson, and David Schulz. Honorary pallbearers will be Virginia “Tootsie” Fischer, James and Charlene Kenjura, Darlene Fischer and Walter Richter.

Memorials may be given to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.
