Obituary

Norman Drexel Head passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015 in Brenham, Texas. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 10 a.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to service time. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Centreville, Mississippi on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 2 p.m.

Drexel was born on December 15, 1925 in Alvarado, Texas and was raised in north Louisiana and Oregon where his family moved to care for his grandparents. Drexel was the second eldest of eight children in his family.

Drexel enlisted and served three years in the Merchant Marines, training at Hoffman Island, NY radio school as a cryptographer. He couldn’t serve in the infantry because he had lost his trigger finger at age nine to an insect bite although he had perfect marksmanship. Drexel then spent two years in the ETO European Theatre of Operations during WWII. The day after maritime discharge he signed up for the USAF (Air Force) reserves for four years during which time he married, started a family and graduated college.

Drexel married his loving wife Dorothy Talbert at the University Methodist Church on the LSU campus in November of 1949. Drexel attained an electrical engineering degree from LSU at Baton Rouge in 1951 at which the greeting was done by Governor Earl K Long.

Drexel and Dorothy raised their family in Beaumont, Texas. He retired from Gulf States Utilities as the manager of the rate department. Drexel and Dorothy then moved to Liberty, Amite County, Mississippi, to care for Dorothy's ailing father. They stayed on there to live their retirement years. In recent years Dorothy and Drexel lived in Brenham, Texas to be near their daughter.

Drexel is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; daughter, Kathy and Bill Boeer of Brenham, Texas; son, Melvin and Debbie Head of Beaumont, Texas; daughter-in-law, Judy Head of Zachary Louisiana; sisters, Agatha and Lonnie Gasaway, of Petit Jean Mtn, Arkansas, Daphne and Paul Higginbotham of Mountain View, Arkansas, Carol Lynne Moore of West Monroe, Louisiana; brother, Chester N. Head of Houma, Louisiana; grandchildren, Melody and Peter Sullivan, Keith Head, Marla Boeer, Mandy and Jason King, Amy and Chris Lilley, Jason and Mindy Head, Jennifer Head; great-grands, Keely, Brodie, Annie, John, Matthew, and Benjamin; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sister Hattibelle Lee, twin brothers Terry Head and Jerry Head, son David E. Head, son Larry Head, daughter Linda Head and grandson Matthew C. Boeer.
