Obituary

Rosa Lee Sommerfield of Brenham, Texas passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Rosa Lee was a very special person and will be missed by many.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 26th from 5-7 p.m. at the Brenham Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be Wednesday, September 27th at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 8201 Old Gay Hill Road, Brenham, Texas 77833 with Pastor Skip Stutts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Rosa Lee was born in Brenham, Texas, on September 5, 1922 to Willie and Emily Green. Rosa Lee walked with her brothers and sister to Possum Trot School (a one- room school house) in Gay Hill until the 9th grade. She married her school sweetheart, Lilburn A. Sommerfield of Brenham on January 6, 1946, two weeks after he returned after the end of World War II. They moved to Galveston, Texas in 1948 when Lilburn found work. They returned to Brenham in 1989. They celebrated 47 years together.

Rosa Lee was a waitress at a local Brenham restaurant before the war. She then became a loving mother and homemaker. After her children were in Junior High School, she started working at the Moody House (Senior Retirement Center) for 5 years. Later, she worked at UTMB as a unit clerk for 18 years before she retired. Rosa Lee enjoyed traveling with Clark Travel motor coach tours with family and friends seeing so much of the United States.

She loved having family and friends stopping by to visit. She always had something sweet to eat. Rosa Lee was always ready for a game of dominos or Pitch. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Brenham and a member of the Ladies Bible Study group and the Altar Guild at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill.

Rosa Lee is survived by two children, daughter, Bonnie Charping of Brenham and Wayne Herrington, son, Jimmie Sommerfield of Galveston; two brothers, Milton Green and wife Lydia of Brenham and Robert Clinton Green of Spring; and a very special friend, Gus Neumann of Brenham. Rosa Lee treasured the time she could spend with her 2 grandchildren, Roy Charping, Shiela Smith and Brad; 6 great grandchildren, Christopher Palmer, Johnathan Charping, Becky Umarov, Emily Bobalik, Courtney Ellis, and Ashley Tonubbee; 5 great-great grandchildren, Malaki Charping, Travis Tonubbee, Rayne Bobalik, Marceleen Ellis, and Cohen Tonubbee; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Rosa Lee is preceded in death by husband, Lilburn Sommerfield; parents, Willie and Emily Green; sister, Bernice Elliott; and brother, Marvin Green.

Pallbearers will be Jason Voelkel, Michael Kinchen, Billy Martinez, Tim McCarthy, Charles Ray Flentge, Sam Martinez, Scott Green, and Jimmie Ray Sommerfield. The family requests that those who wish may give memorials to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill.
