Obituary

Sandy Mertins, 68 of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away April 27, 2016.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in The Woodlands United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Prairie Lea Cemetery. A reception will follow at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Sandra Jean Hudson Mertins, daughter of E.T. and Doris Hudson was born December 16, 1947 in Houston, Texas.

Her early education was in Houston and Beaumont. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1966 and Sam Houston State University in 1970. Sandy was an educator and taught elementary education in both Houston and Klein School Districts. She began her career at Osborne Elementary in Harris ISD, and had a long tenure at Kaiser Elementary in Klein ISD. She retired after thirty years of teaching. She loved children and she loved teaching.

Sandy married Les Mertins on April 10, 1971. They were blessed by two children and five grandchildren. They lived in Northwest Houston for many years and The Woodlands for the past twenty years.

Sandy was preceded in death by: father, E.T. Hudson; mother, Doris Hudson Coburn; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herman and Lydia Mertins; biological mother, Ruby Hardy; and sister, Sheryl Long.

She is survived by: her husband of 45 years, Les Mertins; daughter, Holly Hamby and husband Cary; son, Matt Mertins and wife Kristen; grandchildren, Kallista and Kade Mertins, Parker, Peyton, and Graeme Hamby; sisters, Kerry Arnoldi and husband Jeff, Glenda Scott and Cheryl Calfee; brothers, Jim Hardy, Mike Hardy and Larry Hardy; brother-in-law, Carl Bubba Mertins and sister-in- law, Grace Kankel and husband Willie.

Sandy was a very spirited, gifted, and outgoing person. She loved life and was gifted in working with young children. She enjoyed singing, dancing, traveling, and decorating her home. She was a devout Christian and loved to sing. She was part of Christian singing groups in college and was a member of the church choir for many years. She was a member of Champion Forest Baptist Church for many years and currently was a member of The Woodlands United Methodist Church. She was a great example for her children, her grandchildren, and the many students she taught.

She was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s at the age of 56. She faced it with courage, dignity, and never complaining. She understood that in all things God has a plan and a purpose. She is now in His glory and perfect in His sight.
