Obituary

Sue Johnson Kelly passed away January 16, 2017 at her home after an extended illness. She was 69. Sue was born April 27, 1947, in Houston, TX, to Duane and Eleanor Johnson. Her family later relocated to Beaumont, TX, where she attended school graduating from Forest Park High School in 1965. Sue married Joe Edd Kelly, July 8, 1966 and they continued to reside in Beaumont until moving to Houston in 1973 where she graduated from University of Houston with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Sue was employed by the State of Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation as a social worker and client advocate until her retirement.

Sue and Joe moved to Brenham, TX in 2002 to their retirement home where they enjoyed the friendly people and beautiful, peaceful surroundings. Family, friends, neighbors and her animals were her primary focus, often receiving the comforting benefit of her home cooked food and kind words. An avid horsewoman for many years, Sue competed in area horse shows in Dressage, Hunter Equitation, Hunter over Fences, and Competitive Trail Riding. Her adventurous side led her to join the Gulf Coast Women’s Equestrian Association where she very much enjoyed trail rides that included nights of camping out. At home, Sue could often be seen riding her favorite mount, Stony, in the company of her English setter, Sadie.

Preceded in death by her parents, Sue is survived by her husband Joe Edd Kelly, daughter, Theresa Chambless; grandson, Austin; son Patrick (wife Karen); brother, Paul Johnson (wife Sarai); sister, Cindy MacDonald; and nephew, Ed MacDonald (wife Cynthia).

A memorial service was held at 2 pm, January 31st, at the Brenham Memorial Chapel. The family received friends at the funeral home Tuesday beginning at 1 pm continuing until service time. Sue will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, friend, neighbor, and an especially proud grandmother.
