Agnes (Andy) Anderson

Agnes “Andy” Anderson, 90 of Brenham, died peacefully Saturday, September 11, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Regional Health Center Hospital in Bryan.

She was born August 26, 1920 in West, Texas (McLennan County). Her birth parents were Ludvik and Victoria (Dybal) Kupcak. At the age of six months, her mother died and she was adopted by Ludvik “L.D.” and Anna (Gerik) Karlik. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. She attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and was a 1939 graduate of West High School. She was also a 1942 graduate of Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Waco.

In Waco on a blind date, she met the love of her life, Elton B. Anderson of Brenham. They married May 3, 1943 at St. Mary’s in West. Traveling off to Brenham, they began their 52 years of marriage.

Caring for her family and others was her lifetime commitment. For 52 years, Andy enjoyed her career as a registered nurse, working at St. Frances Hospital, Sarah B. Milroy Hospital, St. Jude Hospital and 32 years at Brenham Clinic, until 1990. She was the Clinic’s second employee, along with Betty Rost Bradley in lab and x-ray, and first nurse working for its founders W. F “Pop” Hasskarl, Sr. M.D., Thomas H. Giddings, M.D. and W. F. “Boy” Hasskarl, Jr. M.D. As the clinic grew, she served as the director of nurses as well as remaining Dr. Boy Hasskarl’s nurse. They were known as the Dynamic Duo.

When needed in the early years of Blue Bell Creamery, Andy helped the Kruse family and her husband, the first route salesman, make enough ice cream products to fulfill orders. She supported Elton in his 52 years at Blue Bell.

Involved with her son, Elton, Jr., Andy was St. Mary’s first Cub Scout Pack 246 den mother and was active in Washington County Little League. After retirement, she assisted him at the family’s Brenham Memorial Chapel funeral home. Andy enjoyed spending time at the farm with her family. She cared for her growing grandsons and was blessed to receive the hugs of a great-grandson, who knew her as “G.G.”

Andy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Brenham since 1943. From 1956-1964 she volunteered many hours to support St. Mary’s Parochial School. She served as a eucharistic minister to nursing home and homebound members and was a member of Parish Council of Catholic Women, and also the rosary and adoration groups.

She was preceded in death by: parents; husband, Elton B. Anderson, Sr. in 1995; sisters and brothers-in-law, Adela and Frank Ondrej, Bennie and Tony Chajnowski; brother Joe Kupcak; sister-in-law, Lillie Kupcak; nephew Joe Charles Ondrej.

Her loving family includes: son, Elton B. “Andy” Anderson, Jr. and wife Karen of Brenham; grandsons, Matthew Anderson and wife Jenny of Brenham, William Anderson and fiancé Jennifer Wolff of College Station; Brian Anderson of Brenham; great-grandson, Jay Anderson; brother, Louis Kupcak of Waco; niece and godchild, Carol Duncan and husband Bill of Arlington; nieces, Helen Seals, Linda Nichols and nephew, Raymond Kupcak of Waco.

Visitation will be Monday, September 13th from 6-8 p.m. with rosary recited at 7 p.m. by Deacon Bill Januszewski in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 14th at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. David Ivey as celebrant. Interment will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Duncan, Albin Bolcerek, Chris Cangelosi, John Hasskarl, L. J. Lacina, Jr., Fidel Vasquez, Bill Winkelmann, Fred L. Winkelmann Honorary pallbearers will be former co-workers of the Brenham Clinic.

In lieu of floral tributes, memorials are requested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hospice Brazos Valley or Blinn College Foundation the Agnes Karlik Anderson R.N. Blinn College Endowed Scholarship for registered nursing 2010.
