He is survived by his wife Patricia of 57 years of marriage, his daughter Laura Mays in Conroe, his sister Margaret Polo de Bernabe in North Carolina, and his cousin Adrienne Utley in Arizona. Al was born in Waren in northern Germany in 1939. At the age of 17 he came by himself to the United States and eventually became a naturalized citizen. Al joined the Air Force and served for five years. During his last year of service, he was stationed close to his ailing father and his mother. Upon release he lived in New York and worked for Grumman Aircraft. In 1966 he was transferred to the Houston Space Center to work on the lunar module/lunar landing project. Pat and Al were married in June of 1966 and immediately drove cross country to Houston. When the project was completed three years later, they were scheduled to return to New York, but he opted to resign and stay in Houston.
