Obituary
Alfred Edward Popp Sr., 81, of Brenham, died June 24, 2008 at his home near the Gay Hill-Long Point Community of Washington County, Texas.
Mr. Popp was born June 27, 1926, in Hillje, Texas to Edward and Helen Popp. On March 5, 1960 he married Evelyn Buerger at St. John’s United Church in Houston.
Mr. Popp grew up on the family farm, leaving at a young age to the city of Houston. There he began his career as a carpenter with Sustala Construction, building many of the homes in the Spring Branch area of Houston. After that, he began working in the steel fabrication business for Kirby Building Systems and later for Trio Building Systems. After partial retirement, he decided to begin another career with Gerlands Food Stores. Finally, in 1995 he and his wife fulfilled their dream of living on the farm again. For a very short time he lived that dream, until his wife was taken from him by cancer in 1996. Mr. Popp began another journey of living alone again and made many friends through his domino games, church organizations and area events. Mr. Popp lived alone and took care of his farm, home and was quite independent until his death. He loved watching his granddaughter play softball, and the Houston Astros.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn Popp, two brothers Frankie and Sammy Popp, two sisters Hattie Sustala and Evelyn Junek, three sisters-in-law Bernice Mantey, Lyle Buerger, Delores Zander and four brothers-in-law Fred Buerger, Jr., Arthur Mantey, Joe Junek, and Pete Sustala.
He is survived by one son Alfred Edward Popp Jr. and wife Laura Mary Popp, one granddaughter Nicole Christine Popp all of Cypress, Texas; one brother Edward Popp of Somerville; one sister Dorothy Rod of Hillje; three sisters-in-law Lonie Popp of Somerville, Bernice Popp Trojcak of Yoakum, Virginia Popp of Louise; three brothers-in-law Erwin Zander and Frank Buerger both of Houston, Edvin Rod of Hillje; numerous nieces and nephews along with a very special friend and companion Jessie Stork of Giddings.
