Obituary

Carey Lacina left this world on May 26, 2019. She was born to Donald H. Ferris and Norma Meers Ferris in Waco, Texas on June 14, 1951. She attended Waco schools and graduated from Waco Richfield High in 1969. Carey attended Blinn College and, in 1975, she graduated from Texas A&M University.

On May 3, 1970, Carey met the love of her life, Johnny Lacina, on a blind date and the two were married on April 28, 1973. They had two children, Rachael and Jonas. For 28 years, she worked at the Texas Department of Human Services and in that time served in the roles of caseworker, supervisor, and interim program manager. Her passion for helping others led her to work for Hospice Brazos Valley and Brenham Floral after retiring from the State of Texas. She adored all of her hard-working co-workers and bosses.

Carey had a passion for animals, had many pets over the years, and during her retirement served on the board of the organization now known as Animal Friends of Washington County. She loved music, had a beautiful singing voice, and sang with the choir at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for several years. Carey enjoyed traveling and was able to visit places around the world with her family. She spent time gardening and working in her flower beds, attending concerts (especially U2 and Jimmy Buffett), musicals, and Astros and Chicago Cubs baseball games. She celebrated with champagne after both the 2016 and 2017 World Series.

Carey is survived by her husband Johnny Lacina; children Rachael Lacina-Taylor and husband Austin, Jonas Lacina; father Donald Ferris; siblings Donnie Ferris, Lori Lowery and husband Jim, Norman Ferris, Randy Nutt and wife Sherrie, Michelle Kile and husband Matt; as well as nieces, nephews and many close friends; beloved pets, Ziggy, Bobby, and Gus. Carey had a big heart, and all who were fortunate enough to have met her saw that immediately. Her outer beauty was only surpassed by her inner compassion.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel. If desired, a memorial contribution may be made to Animal Friends of Washington County, Hospice Brazos Valley, or the Brenham Pet Adoption Center.
