Obituary

Clyde (Sonny) Calloway Jr. age 78, was born on October 15, 1942, in Man, West Virginia to Clyde and Glenna Calloway. The oldest of five children, he joined the Army at the age of 17 as a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and proudly served from 1959 to 1963. After his service to his country, he married Anna (Jackson) Calloway in June 1963 and they had six children.

Clyde lived most of his life in Oklahoma or West Virginia, was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed collecting and shooting guns, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and woodworking. He worked as an auto mechanic and retired after a long career as an electrician for the Dale Coal Company. With these various skills there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix or build, and he was especially adept at making porch swings.

Family was extremely important to Clyde. He loved to have his children and their families with him and enjoyed cooking for them. He was particularly renowned for his ability to make homemade biscuits. Clyde will be missed for his ability to make those around him laugh especially when he wasn’t aware that he was funny. Clyde told stories that never failed to entertain even though he may have told the same stories numerous times and changed the facts over the years. Listening to Clyde laugh while he told the stories was what made them entertaining, regardless of the number of times he had told them.

Clyde was constantly humming a tune and loved listening to jazz music. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs Dee-Dee and Fee-Fee (aka “the girls”), watching TV crime dramas, war movies, and westerns especially when he could share that time with one of his children. Clyde spent many hours listening to his audio Bible and was adamant in his Faith and praised Jesus to the very moment of being called home by the Lord. He repeatedly said he knew that God would heal him or call him home and he was an inspiration with his unwavering faith.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, his oldest son Steven Calloway, and his brother Earl Calloway. He is survived by his daughters Carol Haney (husband Michael), Tina Calloway Pyeatt (husband Ray), and Cindy Calloway; sons Ty Calloway (wife Robynn) and Ace Calloway (wife Rhonda); 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brothers Ronnie Calloway (wife Retha) and Donnie Calloway; sister Wilma Calloway McCray; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his companion Trina Lee who lovingly saw him through numerous surgeries and subsequent rehabilitations over the past few years, including adopting Dee-Dee and Fee-Fee, and to whom Clyde’s family is forever grateful.
