Obituary

Darrell “Jinx” Wayne Matthies, 67 of Burton, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at his home. He was born October 29, 1954 in Brenham, Texas to Weldon Fred and Irene Clara (Dallmeyer) Matthies. He was baptized November 28, 1954, and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1969. He graduated from Burton High School; he was a husky football player who made the All-District 27-A Grid Team tackle spot on both units. He loved football dearly and even in his adulthood would watch all the games on tv. After graduating he began working at Brenham Wholesale and Grocery and retired with many years of service.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Kay Wieghat in December 6, 1980, where they were blessed with 41 years of marriage. In December of 1981 they were blessed with their first born daughter Ashlie Nicole, blessed again in April of 1985 with a second daughter Morgan Elyse. They raised their family in Brenham most of their lives. On the weekends he would spend much of his time in the country, he loved feeding his cattle, bailing hay, or tinkering on anything that his Tanta Vera had him do. Darrell’s dream to live in Burton finally came true when he and Kay built their home 4 years ago. Soon after moving two fur babies joined them, Hazel and Ranger. He enjoyed their company. He loved his children dearly and spent much of his time with his two daughters. He would take them hunting, fishing, coached their little league games and never missed anything they participated in. He continued thus on in their adulthood and was close to both his sons-in-law and precious granddaughters. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Kaylynn and Harper. He would often pick them up and take them for their favorite treat and buy them soda water, Kit Kat and Reese’s. He spoiled them and loved them dearly. He was a big giant with a gentle heart and would do anything for anyone. He loved to barbeque and made the best steaks. He never met a stranger, if anyone knew him, they knew he loved to talk and tell stories. He was loved by many and could be a little stubborn, his favorite saying was, “am I right or am I right”.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife Kay Matthies; daughters and sons-in-law, Ashlie and Darren Derkowski and Morgan and Russell Shay. Granddaughters; Kaylynn Derkowski and Harper Shay. Many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Weldon and Irene Matthies, his in-laws, Lonnie and Viola Wieghat, brothers, David and Dale Matthies and special great Aunt Elvira Dallmeyer.
