Obituary

Don Kerry (Brisket) Barnett, age 65, left this earth Monday, October 3, 2022, to meet Jesus and his loving wife, Cookie.

He was born November 11, 1956, in Bryan, Texas to Donnie Barnett and Margie Lueck. He was baptized at Northview Baptist Church in Bryan and later in life, was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brenham. Don was a devout Catholic. He ushered every Sunday and along with Cookie, taught Religious Education class (CCD) for many years. He served on the church council and earned 4th-degree knight in the Knights of Columbus of which he was very proud.

Don played football while in high school and graduated from Brenham in 1975. He then continued his education by taking courses at Blinn College. Don began his career with Continental Carbon, now R.R. Donnelley, as a junior in high school. Over the years
he excelled to the position of production supervisor/quality control before retiring in 2020.

On April 12, 1990, he was married to the love of his life, Cookie, by Msgr. Ralph Brennan.

In his spare time, Don enjoyed many outdoor activities including dove hunting, playing golf, and fishing where he became a member of the Bass Club and participated in many tournaments. Don was known as the “Big Bass Man” at the marina at Somerville Lake. He enjoyed golf so much that he had his own private green to play on along with his children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. Don loved to watch the deer at his feeder nightly on his game camera. He really loved cooking and grilling for his family and friends, especially barbeque brisket; thus his nickname “Brisket”. Bacon-wrapped dove was a top favorite along with homemade jerky he sent to his grandchildren. Most of all, Don loved his kids all the way down to the “greats”. He never missed a chance to tell a joke and he could deliver a punch-line like no one else.

After Don retired, he enjoyed spending time with Cookie just talking and going on long rides through the country lovingly called “Going on a Honeymoon”. They would pray the rosary together and he would sing “I Love You Lord” to her every night.

Don was preceded in death by Cookie, his soul-mate of 44 years, his son Dennis Maynard, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Alvin and Dolores Baranowski.
He is survived by his mother, Margie Lueck and husband, Lonnie, his father Donnie Barnett, sister, Laurinda Kwiatkowski and husband, Robert, sister Deanna Barnett, and brothers Warren (Rachel) and Jordan (Becky) Barnett.
