Obituary
Dorothy M. Iwig, 86, of Brenham passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Gazebo Terrace Convalescent Center.
Dorothy was born May 23, 1922 in St. Joseph, Missouri to parents Henry and Elanor Vogel Kitzenberger. She attended public schools there and graduated from St. Joseph Junior College before attending and graduating from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. For the next two years she taught music and English in public schools in the greater Chicago area before marrying childhood sweetheart Chester W. Iwig on June 28, 1945. Chester, a newly ordained minister in the Evangelical United Brethren Church, and Dorothy began a +35 year ministry in Coal Creek, Kansas, where Dorothy settled into a lifetime of being a minister’s wife and church secretary. In 1951, they moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, where they served through 1967. A move to Texas came at the end of 1967and until 1980 they served churches in Houston, Palestine, New Gulf/Boling, Texas City, and Jacinto City. Following Chester’s death in 1980, Dorothy moved to Brenham. During her years in Brenham she served as program director and organist at First United Methodist Church in Brenham and for many years as organist at Chappell Hill United Methodist Church until the first of two major strokes forced her into retirement in 2004. She was also active with the Fortnightly Club, was a founding charter member of the Brenham Community Education Board, and created the Community Education Library. Dorothy was an associate member of Chappell Hill United Methodist and a member of First United Methodist Church of Brenham. She was a founding member of the re-established United Methodist Women of Chappell Hill. She enjoyed watching TV and playing the piano.
He parents, husband Rev. Chester Warner Iwig, sister, Elaine Young and brother-in-law Leland Young preceded her in death.
Loving family members include: son and daughter-in-law Keith and Tina Iwig of Brenham; nephews and wives Bruce and Susan Young of Oklahoma City, OK, Warren and Karen Young of Wichita Falls, TX.
The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, January 4, 2009 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 5, 2009 in Chappell Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Paula Behrens-Lopez and Rev. Calvin Beckendorf officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Robert Hoppens, Angel Nunez, Eric Del Toro, Phil Johnson, Michael Wooten, Bob Guire and Eric Dehmer.
