Dorothy Phillips, 90 of Brenham, Texas formerly of Kingsland, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011 in Gazebo Terrace Convalescent Center.
Dorothy was born August 1, 1920 in Big Spring, Texas to parents Lee Ollie and Bertha Greenfield. She attended schools in Tokio, Plains, and Brownfield as well as Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. At a young age she accepted Christ as her Savior and was a life long Baptist. Following graduation from high school she was employed as a telephone operator in Brownfield and Hobbs, N.M. She was married to Richard E. McAdoo in 1941 in Hobbs and moved to Penwell, Texas. From that marriage three children were born. In 1955 she reentered the work force in Brownfield again as a telephone operator and later as a draftsman. In 1957 she began a 24-year career in various cities in the oil business. She was the first woman to be hired by Honolulu Oil Corp. in 1957. Due to buyouts and mergers her later assignments were with Pan American, Amoco, and BP working as a draftsman. In 1962 she married J. D. Phillips. In her spare time she enjoyed painting and woodcarving.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother. Lee Greenfield, Jr.
Survivors include her three children Richard McAdoo and wife Evie of Ft. Worth, Texas, Joanne Sossaman and husband Al of Brenham, and Wayne McAdoo and wife Dodie of Andrews, Texas; six grandchildren Don and Michelle McAdoo, Rick and Lisa McAdoo, Shelly and Shane McWhorter, Heath and Laura Sossaman, Tonya and James Purdom, and Troy and Jennifer McAdoo; 11 great grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren Shelby, Garrett, Whitney, Paxton, Ryan, Audrey, Paige, Ella, Presley, McKaylee, Caleb, Morgan, Joe and Austin. She also survived by brother and sister-in-law Dr. Keller and Wanda Greenfield; sister and brother-in-law Juanell and Gerald Skidmore; sister-in-law Pat Greenfield along with nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, February 25 at Brenham Memorial Chapel from 5-7 p.m.
A graveside service and committal will be held on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Prairie Lea Cemetery, Brenham.
Services are in the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., Brenham, TX.
