I was so sorry to hear about the death of Dr. Garay. I was a student at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas while he taught there. We met after my roommate, who had him as a professor, told me of his incredible life and story of leaving Hungary. I was a journalism student and his story intrigued me, and so introductions were made, and I interviewed him and published my story in the Battalion. It was an incredible tale of his life there and his family's escape during the war. The interview itself was fascinating and he told me a little more details than he wanted published, so he confiscated my tape I was using to record the interview. Luckily for me, he agreed to give me another one and start the interview over, leaving out details that he felt would be harmful if published.
I still have that article, preserved with other memories of Texas A&M, and cherish the little time I got to spend with Dr. Garay.
I would like to offer my condolences to his family and say what an amazing man I found him to be. May he rest in peace... I know he lived a full life and was happy here in the US as it was very evident in his tale. The world is a better place for his having lived in it.
Sincerely,
Amy M. Watson
