Edwin S Schmid

Edwin Stanton Schmid, age 93, passed away on November 8, 2020 in College Station, Texas. Edwin was born on August 29, 1927 in Brenham, Texas to Edwin Schmid and Erna Ressel Schmid.

Edwin was a graduate of Brenham High School and earned his Associates Degree from Blinn College. While in high school he began working for Germania Insurance and then answered the call to join the Army and serve his country in the Korean War. When he returned home he continued working at Germania Insurance and worked his way through the ranks as the Treasurer, Vice- President and finally serving as President for 27 years. During this time he married his beloved wife of 67 years, Florine Ullrich Schmid and had two beautiful children; Linda and Patrick.

Edwin stayed active in the community and held many positions throughout his life such as, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Washington County State Bank, he has served on the Finance Committee at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Election Judge Chairman, member of the Founding Board of Directors for Animal Friends Clinic of Washington County, friend of Boy Scouts of America where he even built a campground on his property and a Scott & White donor. When he wasn’t serving the people of our community you could find him enjoying ceramics, animals (especially dogs), being outdoors at the farm, skiing, gardening, baking cookies, beekeeping, shrimping and most of all, eating good food. Edwin was a lot of things but most importantly he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather but was best known as “Opa” to his family and friends and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Edwin is preceded in death by his parents; Edwin and Erna Schmid, his in laws; Emil and Mary Schwertner Ullrich, Helen Ullrich, Mary Moeller, Frieda Kohrman, Walter Ullrich, Frank Ullrich, Emma Schniers and grandson, Eric Felix Villarreal. He is survived by his wife; Florine Ullrich Schmid, daughter; Linda Villarreal and her husband, Roland, his son; Patrick Schmid and his wife, Georgianne, his grandsons; Jason Rees and Nicholas Villarreal and his wife Stacie and great-grandchildren; Mason, Mateo, Dean, Liam and Felicity.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Donald Spiess, Nicholas Villarreal, Donald Ray Ahrens, David Sommers, David Gieck and Pete Miller.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 6:00 pm at Brenham Memorial Chapel. A funeral mass will be conducted on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10:00 am located at 701 Church St., Brenham, Texas with the burial to follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Animal Friends of Washington County or a charity of your choice.
