Obituary
Fred A. Winkelmann, 93 of Brenham passed away Friday, July 22, 2005 in Bluebonnet Hills Care Center.
He was born in the Salem Community April 24, 1912 to L. F. and Lillie Jahnke Winkelmann. He was baptized May 25, 1912 by Rev. Johannes Mgebroff in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and was confirmed in the same church on April 1,1928 by Rev. Wm. Utesch. He attended Salem public school, graduated from Brenham High School in 1932 and attended Texas A&M University. Fred was active in 4-H Club where he won 2 awards; the first a trip to Chicago World’s Fair, the second to Texas State Fair in Dallas. He also played semi-pro baseball with Salem Hot Shots for 8 years and also tried out with the Houston Buffs. He was an avid baseball fan all his life and was inducted into the semi-pro baseball Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of Salem Shooting Club. Fred worked for Ford Motor Company in Brenham for 43 years as their parts manager. He was a lifetime member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem, serving on church council and singing in the senior choir.
On October 1, 1942 he was married to Lydia Warmke in Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Welcome by Rev. I. M. Mansur. The couple have two children Darrell and wife Jo Ann Winkelmann and Fred L. and wife Bonnie Winkelmann all of Brenham. Other family members include: grandchildren Jeff Winkelmann of Brenham, Sara Winkelmann of Troy, Ohio, Ryan and Stephanie Winkelmann of Brenham, Laura Winkelmann of Lubbock and John Winkelmann of Brenham and his special friend Catherine Cassias of Houston; brother Raymond Winkelmann of Houston; sisters-in-law Gladys Warmke of Bleiblerville and Myrtle Bentke of Brenham; also numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Hildegard Fuelberg and husband Charlie, brothers Louis Winkelmann and wife Lillie, Erwin Winkelmann and wife Mildred, Walter Winkelmann, sister-in-law Dorothy Winkelmann; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Arnold Warmke, Lee and Verlin Warmke, Harry and Mercedes Warmke, Freddie and Lillie Mae Warmke and Walter Warmke, Laura and Ernest Luedke and Anita and Leon Delion.
The Winkelmann family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 24, 2005 in Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem. Rev. Bill Derrick will officiate, assisted by Intern Lisa Burroughs. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Louis Winkelmann, Jr., Dick Dietzmann, Erwin H. Winkelmann, Kenneth Winkelmann, Todd Johnson and Carey Dietzmann.
Honorary pallbearers are Walter Richter, Arthur “Dick” Kochwelp, Charlene and James Kenjura, Agnes “Andy” Anderson, Virginia Fischer, and all former members of the Salem Shooting Club.
Memorials suggested to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem or charity of choice.
