Gilbert L. Weiss

Gilbert L. Weiss, 78, passed away at his residence in Brenham on Wednesday, June 17, 2009.

Gilbert was born March 23, 1931 to parents Edwin L., Sr. and Linda Wiesepape Weiss near Beasley in Fort Bend County, Texas. He was baptized June 7, 1931 in Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beasley. He was confirmed at Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church of Berlin. Gilbert attended Washington county schools at Salem and Berlin. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a Sergeant on the front line when the Truce was signed.

On June 5, 1954 he was united in marriage to Allyne Struckmeyer at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill by Rev. Louis Kramer. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill. Gilbert was self-employed as a brick mason and stone contractor in Brenham for sixty years before his retirement. His wife, Allyne, served as his business partner and bookkeeper. He loved playing the guitar, enjoyed country and bluegrass music, raising cattle, church work, gardening, hunting, fishing and visiting with family and friends. Gilbert spent his latter years caring for his wife, Allyne, with Parkinson’s disease before she passed away in February 2008.

His parents, wife Allyne, sister and brother-in-law Louise and Herman Stroech preceded him in death.

Survivors are son and daughter-in-law Rodney and Dawn Weiss of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Albert Schmidt of Spring; grandchildren Megan Schmidt of Huntsville, Lindsey Schmidt of Austin, Sarah Weiss of Brenham and Pierce Weiss of Brenham; brothers and sister-in-law, Edwin and Edna Weiss of Brenham, Jimmie Weiss of Brenham; sister and brother-in-law Irene and Alfred Brinkmeyer of Katy; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Marvin and Verna Mae Struckmeyer of Navasota; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many friends.

Visitation is from 6-8 pm, Friday, June 19, 2009 at Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral service is 10 a.m., Saturday, June 20, 2009 in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill with Rev. Alan Kethan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers are Kyle Kolkhorst, Arturo Maya, Rick Weiss, Mark Buck, Valgene Kohring, Larry Pape, Gary Stroech, Glenn Brinkmeyer. Honorary pallbearers are Delbert Stelter, Edwin Studhalter, Edward Studhalter, Rev. Virgil Pecht and grandchildren Pierce Weiss, Megan Schmidt, Lindsey Schmidt and Sarah Weiss.

Memorials may be given to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund or Brazos Valley Hospice.
