Obituary

Hildegard Martha Lewis, 99, of Brenham, Texas passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Baylor Scott & White in Brenham. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2019, in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 15, First Baptist Church in Burton with Pastors Larry Ideker and Glen Schoeneberg officiating. Interment will be 1:00 p.m., Sunday, June 16 at Oak Rest Cemetery in Medina, Texas.

Hildegard was born December 19, 1919 in Washington County, Texas, near Burton, to parents Robert A. and Martha L. (Jaroszewski) Fuchs. She was confirmed in St. John’s UCC in Burton, Texas, in 1934, where she married Cecil Isaac Lewis of Medina, Texas, on October 11, 1942. She was baptized into the Baptist faith in a church in Santa Rosa, CA (built from a single redwood tree). They raised four children together and were married 57 years. She was involved in community activities including 4-H club, PTA, and church functions. She was primarily a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, sewing, and gardening. She was a prize-winning baker at the State Fair of Texas, winning Best of Show in the 1980s. She later re-entered the workforce as an executive secretary in the oil industry. She taught Sunday school for decades at Colonial Baptist Church in Dallas and had 40 years of perfect Sunday school attendance. Her church membership at the time of her death was with First Baptist Church in Burton.

She is survived by: sister Louise Jacob; brother Milton Fuchs; daughter Martha Lavery and husband Carl; son Kervin W. Lewis and wife Lisa; daughter Kathryn Trimper and husband Glen; grandchildren Carl Lavery and wife Iris; Andrew Lavery and wife Judy; Beverly Sypert and husband Mark; William Lavery and wife Candace; Scott Lavery; John Lewis; Robert Lowry and wife Torie; granddaughter Katelyn Trimper; nine great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law Beulah Lewis, father-in-law John H. Lewis, husband Cecil I. Lewis, daughter Marjorie A. Lewis, brother-in-law O. T. Lewis, sister-in-law Vivian Lewis, sister-in-law Marjorie Clark, brothers Robert Fuchs and wife Celesta, Franklin Fuchs and wife LaVerne, sisters Mildred Hart and husband Barney, Adeline Landua and husband Lespa, brother-in-law Kervin E. Jacob (Louise) and sister-in-law Lee Fuchs (Milton).

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be given to First Baptist Church of Burton, Colonial Baptist Church of Dallas, or Hospice Brazos Valley.
