Obituary

Hubert John Stiewert, Jr. was born on August 25, 1931, to parents Hubert Sr. and Ida Jahnz of Carmine. Hubert and his five sisters grew up in the area and Hubert attended Sandtown School. Hubert was baptized (October 23, 1932) and confirmed (April 14, 1946) at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine.

In 1952, Hubert was drafted into the US Army. He had many vivid memories of his 4 year term he served during the Korean War. Although sobered by what he saw in the conflict, he was very proud of his military service. Hubert was a longtime member of American Legion Post 654 in Houston.

On May 29, 1957, Hubert was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Gilliam. They made their home in Houston and raised their children. Hubert was a loving husband, and a loving father to Debra Ann and Rick. In later years, Debra became a resident of the Brenham State Supported Living Center. Hubert and Margaret would visit as often as possible, enjoying quality time with Debra and bringing treats to her and the other residents they grew to know and love. In their spare time, Hubert and Margaret enjoyed time spent with friends, going to dances and enjoying the live music and a few cold beverages together.

Hubert began employment as an electrician in 1961 with Manning Electric in Houston, with whom he would spend his entire career. He was very knowledgeable in his trade and was known for his great work ethic. His kind and caring nature would shine often as he would do electrical work for those in need at no charge. Hubert was known for his quips and sayings, but one he said often was, “you can never be poor as long as you have love”. Hubert certainly had the love of many grateful friends and acquaintances that he helped along in life. He and Margaret were kind and loving people who never passed up an opportunity to help someone who needed it.

After the loss of his wife in 2005 and his retirement in 2010, Hubert returned to Carmine. Hubert was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church. He was very involved at Carmine Hall and single-handedly repaired and refurbished the electrical wiring in the old building.

Hubert had a remarkable passion and respect for nature. He enjoyed fishing, but refused to hunt deer because “they were just too beautiful to kill like that”. Any time Hubert was awake, he was outdoors. He was a lumberjack at heart, and loved to care for the land. Although he could be tough on the outside, Hubert had a soft heart. In recent years when Rick brought up the idea to Hubert of a pet to keep him company, Hubert protested… and soon became the owner of a very spoiled dog. Sarah kept Hubert company and she was spoiled with lots of cuddles and Blue Bell ice cream in return. Hubert enjoyed spending time with family and sharing his wisdom.

In recent years as his health failed, Hubert lived with son Rick in Hallettsville, Texas. Even in his late 80’s Hubert could hardly sit still and enjoyed his daily outings accompanying Rick to job sites to “supervise”.

Hubert passed away on July 13, 2020, from health complications, at the age of 88. The family would like to express their gratitude to caregiver Stacy Allen, who cared for Hubert in the recent months as he fought his battle with dementia; and also the staff of Lavaca Medical Center who cared for Hubert in his final days.
