Irene Mazurkiewicz

Irene Mazurkiewicz, 82 of Brenham, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, February 11, 2019.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 14th from 5 p.m. until rosary is recited at 7 p.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 15th at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Brenham. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. in Guardian Angel Catholic Cemetery, Wallis.

Irene was born February 21, 1936 to Frank and Agnes (Hanzelka) Tobola in East Bernard, Texas. At age four, her father died. When her mother married Emil Polasek, he became the father she grew to love. Irene attended East Bernard High School, where she was a twirler and was also on the volleyball team. On June 27, 1954, she married Leonard Steve Uhyrek. They moved to Wallis. Together working their farm, the family was self-sufficient. Irene was a true homemaker. She grew a garden and canned its bounty. Irene also enjoyed sewing. After her husband died at age 45, she also worked as a meat wrapper at local meat markets. In 1981, she married Joe “Tony” Mazurkiewicz. The couple moved to Brenham, Joe’s hometown. They were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she did Adoration Chapel along with other active volunteerism. Other memberships include SPJST Lodge in East Bernard and First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of Wallis Branch.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and son-in-law Rob Hoover, step-sons Chris and Ed Mazurkiewicz.

Surviving loving family includes: children and spouses, Leonard A. and Delores Uhyrek of Meadows Place, Texas, Michael and Robbie Uhyrek of Pearland, Texas, Janet and Ricky Cherrington of Sugar Land, Texas, Janice Hoover of Colleyville, Texas, Diana and Rick Lee of Lewisville, Texas, Barbara Jaloway of Sealy, Texas, Mary and Charles Holtkamp of Brenham, Texas, Clara and Paul Grundy of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Lenny and Sara Uhyrek, Jacob Uhyrek, Lauren Cooper, Justin and Kourtney Uhyrek, Jessica and Joe Rivers, Josh Hoover, Ryan Hoover, Ashley Lee, Kelsey Lee, Patricia Jaloway, Alison Malinowski, Chris Grundy, Adam Grundy, Tony Flannery and Frank Flannery; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren: Lenny Uhyrek, Jacob Uhyrek, Lauren Cooper, Justin Uhyrek, Josh Hoover and Ryan Hoover.
