Obituary

James Reese Jones, 56 of Brenham, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2005. Mr. Jones was born July 1, 1949 in Brenham, Texas to James and Kathyrine Jones. He was baptized and confirmed at First United Methodist Church in Brenham and graduated from Brenham High School. On July 18, 1971 he and Sally Machemehl of Brenham were married at St. John Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill.

Mr. Jones was a graduate of Texas Christian University and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the army. He earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Baylor Law School in 1973. Following his tenure in the army, he worked in Boerne, Texas for the law firm Gordon Holland and Associates. He returned to Brenham in 1976 and established his law practice. Mr. Jones served as county attorney of Washington County for several years. He was active in many historical organizations including the Sons of the Republic of Texas, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, San Jacinto Descendants, and Magna Charter Barons. He was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church and served in many leadership capacities, including the Board of Trustees and Pastor-Parish Committee. Mr. Jones held membership in the Lions Club, Washington County Historical Society, Brenham Heritage Society, Texas State Historical Society, American Legion, and served as chairman of the March of Dimes and of the Volunteer Council of the Brenham State School. He was a founder and director of the Bank of Brenham.

Survivors include his wife, Sally; son, Jared Alexander Jones; daughter, Jill and husband Charles Moore; granddaughter, Meredith Julie Moore; mother Kathyrine Reese Jones; sister, Kathyrine Simank and husband Charles; sister, LeGrand Spradley and husband Larry; mother-in-law Doris Machemehl; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Chuck and Susie Machemehl. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Alexander Jones, and daughter, Julie Ann Jones.

The funeral will be held Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Wesley Welborn and Reverend Sam Duree officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery, Brenham.

Pallbearers are Joe Burroughs, Edwin Fisher, Ronald Holle, William Krueger, Craig Lesser, William Nutt, John Pledger, and Stephen Stuckert.
