Obituary
John O. “Johnny” Fischer, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, June 29 in Brenham after a long decline.
Johnny was born on September 9, 1925 in Giddings as the youngest of three children of Otto and Lillie Fischer and grew up in Austin, Texas. He joined the Navy during WW II and served as Chief Petty Officer of the U.S.S Maryland, where he developed a life-long love of aviation. After the war, Johnny moved to Brenham on the advice of Austin businessman Dick Jones, who recognized the small town’s economic potential. A leading figure in Brenham’s post-war development, Johnny established Fischer Tile Company in 1948 and eventually provided commercial and residential flooring services throughout central Texas and the Gulf Coast. He took great pride in the craftsmanship of his employees, many of whom remained with the company throughout their careers. He was also active in real estate and natural resource developments in many counties in Texas and California. Johnny was a member of numerous civic and church organizations and always took a keen interest in promoting Brenham’s commercial activities. A devoted husband, and the most loving of fathers, his nature comprised equal parts of energy, determination, and generosity. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.
Johnny is survived by his son, Dr. John David Fischer, of Chicago, Illinois, his treasured friend and helper, Mary Hurtado, three beloved nieces, and a nephew. Johnny is preceded in death by his wife, L.V. Fischer, to whom he was married for 50 years, his sisters Ruby Hobbs and Olga Puryear, and his parents.
