John Thornbrugh Sr.

John Thornbrugh, Sr. passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 12, 2018 at Scott & White Hospital in College Station.

John was born in Ulysses, Kansas on April 22, 1951 to Elmer Thornbrugh and Bonnie Jean Delores Rall.

He married Evelyn Young in 1969. They shared 49 wonderful years together and raised three loving children. John was a family man and was dedicated to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. He always had a smile on his face and was truly a people person. This quality was of great benefit to him in his retail career. Over the years John’s career in retail moved the family from Nebraska to Kansas and eventually to Texas.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and Popo, Papa, and Papo to his grandchildren. He delighted in spending time with his family. His five grandchildren and great-grandchild were special treasures, he was always anxious to see them and know the latest going on in their young lives.

John Sr. and Evelyn had recently retired and returned to Brenham, Texas. However, the salesperson in him could not just sit back and relax. “Stay home” was not in his vocabulary. His latest venture was working with Hallmark as a territory supervisor. This was the perfect job for John. He enjoyed being out in public and socializing with people.

John is survived by his mother, Bonnie Jean Delores Rall; loving wife Evelyn; three children Tammy (Robert) Hajek of Brenham, Stacy (Tim) Fitzgerald of Brazoria, and John (Kris) Thornbrugh Jr. of Brazoria; five grandchildren Kourtney Hajek, Kaleigh and Shelby Fitzgerald, Dawson and Harper Thornbrugh, and great-grandchild Hadley Grace; sister Bonnie (Wade) Sims; brothers Ross (Gail) Thornbrugh, Gene (Diane) Rall; and many other nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

John Sr. is preceded in death by his father Elmer Thornbrugh; step-father, Eugene Rall; parents-in-law, Wilber and Threasa Young; and step-mother Virginia Thornbrugh.

A memorial service celebrating John Sr.’s life will be held at Christ Lutheran Church of Brenham on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at 10:30 am.
