Obituary

Lenora ("Mrs. Z") Zieschang, 85, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, in her residence at Hudson Creek Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Bryan, Texas. She was surrounded by members of her family, including both her daughters Gail and Jill and her nephew Jim. Mrs. Zieschang leaves for Heaven to join her husband Edwin "Zeke" Zieschang, who had previously passed from this earth in November of 2010.

Mrs. Zieschang was born Lenora Evelyn Kobs on January 8, 1934, to Harvey and Clara Kobs. She and her parents, along with her brother Floyd moved to Washington County from Houston's Addicks Dam area in 1947, relocating the family's dairy farm. They never regretted their decision to relocate near Brenham and were happy and engaged residents of the community since that time.

She graduated from Brenham High School in 1951 and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Blinn College two years later. While a student at Blinn, friends arranged a blind date with Edwin "Zeke" Zieschang, who was at that time a member of Texas A&M University's Corps of Cadets. They became the love of each other's lives. Following his overseas service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, they married on March 2, 1957. Shortly after that, they welcomed two daughters, Gail and Jill, within their first five years of marriage.

While Zeke managed a ranch near Chappell Hill, Mrs. Zieschang settled into a life as a mother and a homemaker. This profession continued for nearly a decade until she was offered a position as secretary to the guidance counselor at Brenham High School in 1973. It was at BHS that she began a career as an educator, advancing through the ranks from secretary to school registrar. This career would last until her formal retirement from in 2003, though she worked part-time for many years after that. As the beloved "Mrs. Z" of Brenham High School, her second family includes countless students, faculty, and staff during her 40 years of dedicated service.

"Giving" characterized the nature of Mrs. Zieschang's life. She was giving to her family, giving to the students of BHS, and giving to her friends and coworkers. She was also a habitual blood donor, and at one time, was presented with a unique mug commemorating 44 gallons of blood donated over several decades. Long after her retirement, she continued to donate blood regularly at drives for St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Beyond her children and her second BHS family, more than anything else, Mrs. Zieschang loved being the wife of Edwin "Zeke" Zieschang. Together they were faithful participants and supporters of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Every summer, before classes would begin again for the fall, she and Zeke would set aside several weeks for road trips. They traveled to California, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, and other locations in the Pacific Northwest. Their favorite place was Glacier National Park – a scenic wonderland extending from the United States into Canada. They enjoyed their last trip together in the summer of 2010 shortly before Zeke's passing.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 10:00 am at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Phil Geleske officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her husband.

Mrs. Zieschang is survived by two daughters, Gail Chester and husband Timothy of Athens, Georgia and Jill Martin and husband Brad of The Woodlands, Texas; four grandchildren, Duane Whittaker and his wife Danielle of Hutto, Texas; Amy Zidek and her husband Jason of Spring, Texas; Luke Martin of Houston, Texas; and Lindsey Rulua and her husband Roman of Houston, Texas; and six great-grandchildren, Rhett, Ricky, and Zeke Zidek and Blake, Landon, and Lance Rulua. She will be missed by family, friends and the students, faculty, and staff of Brenham High School.

Memorials may be given to Allumine Hospice, College Station, Texas, or St. Paul's Christian Day School.
