Lois was born on Oct. 21, 1931 in Hempstead, Texas, the only child of Fritz and Lois Lawrence Muckelroy. After graduating as a top student from Hempstead High School, she attended her mother’s alma mater, Southwestern University in Georgetown, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952. While at Southwestern, she was a cheerleader, a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and other campus organizations. Her senior year, she served as president of her sorority and was asked to become a National Traveling Secretary but declined in order to marry Robert A. Winkelmann. They wed in Hempstead on March 22, 1953.
They made their home in Brenham, where Robert A. established his dental practice and Lois devoted her life to being a wife, mother and civic volunteer. Baptized in the Methodist church as a child, she became a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and devoted much of her time to the church serving as president of the altar guild, circle member, Sunday school teacher and church council member.
Lois also served as a Girl Scout Troop leader, Maifest volunteer, chairman of the Hotel Occupancy Tax Board, Good Fellows volunteer, and associate member of the Fortnightly Club, to name a few. Many will remember that she was a lovely hostess, beautiful seamstress, bridge player, hunter, world-wide traveler and someone who loved life.
She became an inspiration to many as she courageously dealt with the tragic death of Robert A. due to a car wreck in March, 1981.
On April 13, 1985, she married Maurice Eugene “Shorty” Trostle. They traveled and spent much time with their family and friends. After her stroke, Shorty was a diligent and ardent caregiver to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and son-in-law, Lee Cook.
