Obituary

Marjorie Rowles Stakes, 90 of Brenham, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2005 in Trinity Medical Center.

Marjorie was born March 12, 1915 in Flint, Michigan to William C. and Jean (Crichton) Rowles. She lived in Michigan most of the first thirty years, graduated from Albion College in Albion, Michigan and spent another year at Merrill-Palmer School in Detroit in preparation for pre-school teaching. She moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1946 with her husband Bill, where she was Director and teacher at St. Andrews Methodist Church School for 3, 4 & 5 year olds. She lived in Houston for a number of years before settling in Brenham in 1980, where her husband died later that year.

She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, affiliated with the KD Alumnae Associations in Detroit, San Antonio and Houston. She served as province Alumnae officer and served 6 years as National Alumnae Vice President on National Council. She was honored by Kappa Delta by having the award for Outstanding Alumnae Association named the “Marjorie Rowles Stakes Award”.

Marjorie taught Sunday school for young children in Detroit, San Antonio and Houston and for older adults at the Methodist churches at Lake Houston and Brenham. She was a member of the Brenham Fortnightly Club and past member and president of garden clubs at Lake Houston and San Antonio. She was a member of Chappell Hill United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill, son Bill, Jr. and brother Bill Rowles, Jr.

She is survived by sons: Jim Stakes and wife Jana Dehmer of Brenham, Jack Stakes and his wife Ellen of Rhode Island; grandchildren Sherri Howe of Brenham, Michael Stakes and wife Andrea of Houston, Derek Woodruff and wife Debbie of Houston, Meghan Lawrence of Alabama and Chelsea Lawrence of Brenham; great-grandchildren Ashley Gaskamp Kokemoor and husband Kyle of Brenham, William Stakes, Scott Stakes and Sarah Stakes of Houston.

Visitation with the Stakes family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2005 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, 2005 in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Rev. Calvin Beckendorf will officiate. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 19, 2005 at Brookside Memorial Park, Eastex Freeway, Lauder Exit, Houston, Texas, with burial to follow.

Memorials may be given to Kappa Delta Alumnae Association of College Station, Texas or your favorite charity.
