Mary Dell was born March 10, 1922 to Albert J. and Mary (Schawe) Lehmann in the Muellersville Community of Washington County. She was baptized at home on April 9, 1922 and confirmed April 5, 1936 in Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor William Utesch.
When Mary Dell was only six years old she began school at Salem Public School. In 1939, she graduated from Brenham High School with honors. During high school, she was a member of the Pep Squad for three years and was very active in 4-H. In 1939, Mary Dell was chosen as the Washington County Gold Star Girl. She attended Blinn Jr. College from 1940-41. Mary Dell had several jobs as a secretary and bookkeeper before she became head bookkeeper at Washington County State Bank from 1944 to 1952.
On November 10, 1946 she was united in marriage to Milton Robert Hueske by Pastor Arthur J. Mohr also at Salem. In 1949 Mary Dell, Milton and Milton’s brother Albert, purchased a farm that had been in the Lehmann family since 1857. In 1952 she and Milton began farming and ranching together on a full time basis. She was known to recall that this is when she and Milton really went to work. Not only did she run the household, she also worked alongside Milton in the fields as well as taking care of all the farm animals and two large gardens. She was a great homemaker and enjoyed 4-H projects with her children. Mary Dell enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, baking, flowers and hummingbirds. She doted on her grandchildren and the love was returned. Mary Dell was the glue that held the family together. She was a lifelong member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Salem where she was involved in the Esther Circle and the Senior Citizens group where she enjoyed the game of dominoes.
