Mrs. Garland D. Spencer

Mrs. Garland D. Spencer, age 96 of Brenham, formerly of Houston and Chappell Hill, passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2008.

Mrs. Spencer was born May 26, 1912 in Denver, Colorado to Arthur G. and Mae M. Deegan Dibbens. She was baptized in 1912 and on November 14, 1934 she was confirmed at Trinity Episcopal Church in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She attended schools in Guthrie and Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State). On November 30, 1934, she married Jean Stephen Spencer in Guthrie, Oklahoma. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Brenham and the Chappell Hill Historical Society. Gigi, as she was known, received excellent assistance for the last fourteen years from Jo Ann, Janice, Paula, Gwen, Norma, Dolly, Allison, Jean and Julie as well as from the AMA Nurses. She enjoyed the farm in Chappell Hill and loved being with her grandchildren. She also became very fond of all her surrogate great grandchildren, Garren, Brandon, Brendon, Saul (Jr.), Anna and Aseneth, children of her devoted caregivers.

Her parents, husband and sister Kathryn A. Lewis preceded her in death.

Survivors include: sons and daughter-in-law Stephen D. Spencer of Houston, William Thad and Sarah H. Spencer of Brenham; grandchildren Bill Spencer and wife Lynn of Charlotte, No. Carolina, Angela M. Spencer Materna and husband Thomas of Stanford, Conn.; nephew Michael Lewis of Lubbock and niece Susan Lewis of Philo, Calif.

There will be no set visitation.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 23, 2008 at Atkinson Cemetery in Chappell Hill. Father David Ottsen and Mr. Ed Duckworth will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, please give memorials to Hospice, donor’s own church or favorite charity.
