Paula Hogan Baker

Paula (Hogan) Baker, 70, of Brenham, passed away peacefully at home into the arms of Jesus on September 26, 2026 surrounded by her family.

Paula was born on November 20, 1955, to AC and Lavelle (Loyd) Hogan in Port Arthur, Texas. She was baptized and confirmed at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Nolan Vance. Paula was a 1974 graduate of Nederland High School, where she then continued her education at Lamar University in dental hygiene. It was at Lamar that Paula met the love of her life, her best friend, her husband, Ken.

On July 12, 1975, Paula married Ken at First United Methodist Church in Nederland, Texas. In April of 1977, they welcomed their first child John David Baker and in September of 1980, they welcomed their daughter, Amanda (Baker) Gurka. Shortly after the birth of Amanda, Ken and Paula packed up the family and moved to Brenham.

Upon moving to Brenham, Paula began working at Germania Insurance where she was a long-term valued employee. However, as opportunity arose to work alongside Ken and own a business, Paula left Germania to pursue the work of “pools.” It wasn’t long in this move that Paula quickly became the backbone of the company and continued to work there until a short time ago. In between the hours of work, Paula was always a dedicated member of Champion Fellowship. She had a strong faith and relationship with her church. Although she and Ken have not been lifetime members, they created a “lifetime” of memories as well as a lifetime of friends.

Outside of the family business, Paula enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. Whether she was traveling around the world, looking for sand dollars at Port O’Connor, attending fellowship with her church, family, or simply working in her yard, she did it with joy and passion. However, her greatest joy and passion were her four grandkids. She made it her priority to be there for and attend every event any of them ever had. From baseball and softball to volleyball and golf, even to all the ringside seats of the livestock shows near and far, she never missed the opportunity to be there cheering them on. Family was Paula’s most valued possession, her greatest accomplishment, and the most important legacy she leaves behind.

Paula is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Ken, her son and daughter-in-law John David and Melanie (Weatherby) Baker, daughter and son-in-law Amanda (Baker) and Curtis Gurka. Grandchildren Dylan Baker and fiancé Madyson Hall, Kylie Baker, Kendal Gurka, and Kayn Gurka. Sisters Ramona and Jim Metts of Orange, Texas, Lana Flory of Houston, Texas, and Becky Pope and special friend Billy Nelson of Nederland, Texas. Brothers-in-laws Doug Baker and wife Loretha and Dave Baker and wife Carrie. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as many cherished friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents AC and Lavelle (Loyd) Hogan, parents-in-law Johnny and Rodell (Klump) Baker, brother-in-law Donny Pope, as well as many aunts and uncles.

Serving as pallbearers are Dylan Baker, Kayn Gurka, Doug Baker, Dave Baker, David Stegent, and David Hermann. Honorary pallbearers are Kendal Gurka, Kylie Baker, Glenda Stegent, Wanda Hermann, Diane Muse, Dorothy Holle, Deana and Weegie Scheel, Ashley Hall, Troy Hoppens, Tyler Morgan, and Joel Cowart.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026 from 8am until 7pm, with family present from 5pm until 7pm at Brenham Memorial Chapel to receive family and friends. A funeral and celebration of life will be on Saturday, October 3 at 10am at Champion Fellowship in Brenham with burial following in Prairie Lea Cemetery with Tim Webb officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice Brazos Valley.
