Obituary
Raymond Lee Gibbs Jr., lovingly known as “Ray,” passed away on August 15, 2025, in Brenham, Texas, at the age of 72. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 25, 1952, Ray was the son of the late Raymond Lee Gibbs Sr. and Gloria Marion Humpfrey Gibbs of Brenham, Texas.
Ray grew up in Michigan and graduated from Lake Orion High School in 1970. Two years later, his life took a profound turn when he became a born-again Christian during the Jesus Movement—an experience that guided his values and outlook on life.
In 1975, Ray moved to Brenham, Texas, where he and his father founded Gibbs Service Company. As a Master Electrician and HVAC Technician, Ray specialized in commercial refrigeration systems, building not only a successful business but also a reputation for integrity, skill, and reliability. Many in Brenham remember his dedication to quality and the pride he took in his work.
Outside of his career, Ray was a gifted musician who loved playing the drums. Over the years, he performed with several local bands, always bringing energy and rhythm to every performance. His love of music was matched only by his love of laughter. Known as a world-famous joke-teller among friends and family, Ray could turn any moment into one of joy. His infectious laugh and ability to make others smile were gifts he shared freely with everyone he met.
Ray is survived by his children: Raymond Gibbs III of Brenham, Texas; Daniel Gibbs and wife Ying of Katy, Texas; and Jason Gibbs and wife Consuelo of Chicago, Illinois; as well as his children's mother, Lee Ann Williams Gibbs Wright of Brenham, Texas. He also leaves behind two grandsons, four granddaughters, and siblings Del Chamberlin, Dawn Brooks, and David Alonza Gibbs Sr. He was preceded in death by his sister Diane Smith.
A private memorial service was held at Brenham Memorial Chapel on August 21, 2025. Ray will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his kindness, laughter, and love for family.
