Obituary

Richard Spartan Goodlett, 77, of Brenham passed away Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Richard was born on November 12, 1947, in Brenham, Texas, to William and Betty (Kocurek) Goodlett. After graduating from Brenham High School in 1966, he joined the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War. On March 1, 1969, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Macat at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. R.L. Gilpin officiating. Together, they were blessed with 48 years of marriage. Richard retired after more than 40 years in the roofing industry.

Richard was a gentle, soft-spoken man who lived a simple life and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Gifted in woodworking, he spent time on remodeling projects and flipping houses. He had a love for gardening and always grew a large garden, generously sharing his fresh vegetables with others. After Dorothy’s passing, Richard discovered a new passion for cooking and baking. His sweet tooth often led him to whip up homemade cobblers and jellies, which quickly became a favorite for all. He also enjoyed hunting and even crafted his own bows and arrows. Above all, his greatest pride and joy was his family, whom he loved deeply and cherished beyond measure.

Richard was preceded in death by both of his parents, wife Dorothy, sister Eva Miller and brother David Goodlett.

Left to cherish his memories are sons and daughter-in-laws Nathan and Bridget Goodlett, Brandon and Janna Goodlett; grandchildren Hayden Goodlett, Cole Goodlett and Layla Goodlett; sister Settie Rutland; brother-in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Richard will be Thursday, August 7, 2025 from 8a.m. until 7p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Family will be present from 5:00p.m. until 7:00p.m. Services will be held at Champion Fellowship on Friday, August 8, 2025 at 10:00a.m. with Pastor Tim Webb officiating. A private burial will take place at Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are Nathan Goodlett, Brandon Goodlett, Hayden Goodlett, Cole Goodlett, Matthew Macat, and Jonathan Macat. Honorary pallbearers are Layla Goodlett and Joshua Macat.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Acara Hospice and Legacy Nursing and Rehab in Bryan, Texas for the compassionate care that was shown to Richard and his family in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Champion Fellowship.

Services are in the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., Brenham, Texas 77833.979.836.3611. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.brenhammemorialchapel.com
