Obituary

Colonel (Retired) Robert Michael Luckey, USA, age 86, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2019.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 26 at 11 a.m.at Brenham Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall with Rev. Dr. Brent Hampton officiating. Military honors by Brenham Honor Guard will follow.

He was born March 15, 1933 in Wenatchee, Washington, the only child of Robert Edward and Mildred Vaughn Luckey. As a small boy, the family moved to Connell, Washington, where he attended and graduated from the Connell school system. He received his undergraduate degree in Radio and Television from the University of Washington and was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the ROTC program. He received his graduate degree in journalism from Central Michigan University.

Colonel Luckey was an Army paratrooper and Green Beret reserve officer whose military career spanned 27 years of active duty and reserve military service. During that time, he served as a troop commander, logistician, journalist, public affairs officer and psychological operations officer.

While serving in the U.S. Army Reserve in Seattle, his then-civilian career included employment as an advertising copywriter, account executive, and corporate director for advertising and marketing.

Deployed twice to Vietnam, Colonel Luckey served first in Pleiku and then Dalat. Other assignments included Stuttgart, Germany; Fort Lee, Virginia; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Central Michigan University; Honolulu, Hawaii; Izmir, Turkey; Fort Sam Houston and Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

He also served his Lord in many ways. On retirement from military service he became Executive Director of Christian Assistance Ministries in San Antonio, Texas. He served in many volunteer positions, to include the Board of the Salvation Army in Alamogordo, New Mexico; elder of the church session in Del Rio, Texas; Faith Mission; Mission Brenham; and Bread Partners in Brenham, Texas.

Colonel Luckey was an adored son, beloved husband, and awesome father to his four children, grandfather to his six grandchildren and great grandfather to his two great granddaughters. He was a mischievous, creative, talented child, student, teacher, reader, writer, poet, story-teller extraordinaire. He was a musician, loved art, theater and music in all forms.

“Mike” was gregarious and a friend to all he met. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marcia, and four children: Robert Edward and Lynne Luckey, Seattle, Washington; Rev. Dr. Michael Scott and Sarah Jane Luckey, Jacksonville, Florida; Susan and Lt. Col. (retired) James Sackreiter, Brenham, Texas; and Robin Luckey, also of Brenham, Texas. His six grandchildren are: Amie and Robert Dockter, Mukilteo, Washington; Kate Sackreiter, Vancouver, British Columbia; Andrea Sackreiter, Austin, Texas; Megan Luckey, Seattle, Washington; Matthew Luckey and Grace Luckey, Jacksonville, Florida. Also two great granddaughters are: Leyla Viktoria and Anika Signa Dockter, Mukilteo, Washington.
