Obituary

Ruby Schlottmann, 97, widow of Lonnie Schlottmann, of Brenham, passed away on May 7, 2020.

Ruby Louise was born on October 8, 1922, at the home of her parents Robert and Minnie Louise (Kruse) Wernecke. She attended local schools and graduated from Brenham High School. She continued her education at Alamo School of Beauty, a cosmetology school in San Antonio.

On January 9, 1946, Ruby was united in marriage to Lonnie Schlottmann at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill. Ruby was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and was a faithful and devoted Christian. Ruby was involved, at different times in her years, in teaching Sunday School, leading bible studies, participating in Ladies’ Aid Society, and working on projects with the quilt group. She was always present and would lend a helping hand whenever she could.

Ruby was very artistic and talented. She made intricate quilts and was an accomplished seamstress. She made quilts for all her kids and grandkids, with a special acuity for matching colors and fabrics. She also enjoyed working on detailed coloring pages.

Having spent the majority of her life living in the country, Ruby was able to enjoy the outdoors, keeping a garden and making use of the produce by canning and cooking. She loved getting her large family together to enjoy each other’s company over a delicious meal she had prepared. She would feed the grandkids plenty of the wonderful desserts she baked, and didn’t mind if they got a little hyper from the sugar. She treasured every moment of their time together and often volunteered to babysit so she could spend a little extra time with them.

Ruby is preceded in death by her husband Lonnie in 2005; her parents; son-in-law Willie Rosenbaum, brother, the Reverend Harold Wernecke, sister-in-law Gretchen Wernecke, and brothers-in-law Marvin Schroeder and Wilbert Horstmann.

Surviving loving family includes: sister, Hilda Horstmann, brother Dr. Robert Wernecke (Sue), daughters, Linda McCulloch (Morris), Sandra Lange (David), Karen Rosenbaum, and Debra Kovar (Glenn); grandchildren, Melissa Standley (Drew), Alison Guerrero (Jorge), Mark Rosenbaum (Kim), Brian Rosenbaum, Kyle Rosenbaum (Stephanie), Brent Kovar (Stacy), Rachel Allen (Chris), Landon Fritz (Catelyn), Justin Fritz, Morgan Culp (Phillip), and Caitlin McCulloch, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Also, nieces and nephews who still kept in contact and expressed their love continually.

The family regrets that due to ongoing public health concerns, services will be private. For those who wish to pay their respects, Ruby will lie in state and be available to view from 8:00am until 7:00pm, Monday, May 11, 2020, at Brenham Memorial Chapel.
