Obituary

Ruby S. (Meyer) Byrd passed away Friday, September 4, 2009 in Trinity Medical Center at the age of 92.

Daughter of Reinhard H. and Hilda (Muegge) Meyer, she was born on September 24, 1916, in New Wehdem, Austin County, Texas. She was baptized on November 3, 1916 at St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem by Rev. H. Poehlmann and was confirmed on April 10, 1932 by Rev. Arthur Hartman at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham. She received her primary education at New Wehdem Public School, graduated from Brenham High School on May 29, 1934, and Blinn College on June 3, 1935. On August 16, 1953, she was united in marriage with Nathan L. Byrd at First United Methodist Church of Brenham by Rev. Noah Range and Rev. Charlie Lamb. To this union they were blessed with one daughter, Cynthia Ann Byrd.

She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Brenham and the Wesleyan Circle. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, having served as President of the Auxiliary in 1972 alongside her husband as he served as Commander of the American Legion. She was a former employee of Hohlt’s Department Store and Farmers National Bank.

Mrs. Byrd loved being outdoors doing all of her own yard work and sharing a garden with her special granddaughter, Cayte. She was a loyal fan of the Blinn College Buccaneer Football team for many years as well as the Houston Astros and Brenham Cubs. She loved to travel with family and friends and she and her husband did a lot of fishing until his health declined.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Nathan L. Byrd, preceded her in death on September 3, 1991.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Ann and Monte Giebler, beloved granddaughter, Catherine Elizabeth Giebler, brother-in-law, J.S. Byrd, sister-in-law, Theresa M. Richards, nephew John L. Byrd, special goddaughter and her husband Jeanie and Allen Stepan, very dear cousins, Elmer F. Kettler and Patsy Greiner, and numerous other cousins and special friends.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Raj Cheruku, Dr. Gregg Workman, Dr. Charlie Moore, Brazos Valley Hospice and Trinity Medical Center for their loving care.

Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 p.m., Monday, September 7, 2009 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2009 in First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Chance and Rev. Terry Dougherty officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Donald Voelter, Don Wilhelm, Gary Ivy, Kerry Ellis, Larry Kieke, Winston Rosenbaum, Keith Iwig and Tim Richardson. Honorary pallbearers are Rev. Earl McIntyre, Norman Hodde, and Ernest Platte.

Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church of Brenham, Blinn College Foundation, 902 College Avenue, Brenham, TX or Brazos Valley Hospice.
