Rudolph “Sonny” Vogler, Jr

Rudolph “Sonny” Vogler, Jr., age 85, of Brenham passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the family residence.

Sonny was born in Wesley, Texas on September 28, 1925 to Rudolph Vogler, Sr. and Josephine (Grote) Vogler. He was baptized in Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome on February 21, 1926 and confirmed in the same church on March 17, 1940. He was educated in Wesley School. He was married for 58 years to the love of his life, Dorothy Zwahr, on June 29, 1952. Sonny was a member of Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church of Berlin.

Sonny worked at the Cotton Mill, Sealy Mattress, partnered with P&R Catering, and he loved his jobs at the Auction Barns, including Hockley, El Campo, Port City Stockyards, Brenham Livestock and Four County. Sonny was awarded “Top Hand” award from Port City Stockyards in 1977.

He loved his dog, Missy, his cattle, riding horses, watching westerns, camping at Lake Somerville, Polka music and dancing.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph, Sr. and Josephine (Grote)Vogler, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Rosie Zwahr, one brother, two sisters, five brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Zwahr Vogler; children, Jimmy and Darlene Vogler, Doris Eckert and close friend Donald Knebel, Sandy and Paul Kaminski, Tammy Ginn and special friend, Larry Goldberg; grandchildren Ryan and Sara Eckert, Rachel Eckert, Chad and Gretchen Vogler, Ashlea and James Mathis, Josh Kaminski and fiancé, Brooke Higgs, Garrett Ginn and fiancé Stefani Martin and Taylor Ginn; seven great-grandchildren with the eighth one due in October; sister-in-law, Carol Zwahr, brothers-in-law, Wallie Zwahr and Billy Zwahr, and also numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday, April 29, 2011 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 30, 2011 in Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church of Berlin with Ken Weiss, Lay Minister, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.


Pallbearers are Ryan Eckert, Chad Vogler, Josh Kaminski, Garrett Ginn, Taylor Ginn, James Mathis and Zachary Eckert. Honorary pallbearers are Rachel Eckert and Ashlea Mathis.

Memorial contributions may be given to Eben-Ezer Lutheran Church of Berlin or Hospice Brazos Valley.
